Hello,

My name is Danny Corcoran, I have a brother Tommy and my dad was called James Thomas. My granny Elizabeth Corcoran (DOB 14/05/1905) was from the Caslecomer area (I think). We all lived in Manchester UK.

A long time ago she told me she had relations in the Killkenny area. I believe the name was Terhesa Maher and she had two sons, I had a very brief telephone conversation with Terhesa in the early eighties and then lost contact. I have been to Ireland many times and have searched these towns with no luck, maybe somebody knows or has heard of this family.

Thank you

Danny

Can't help with Terhesa Maher ( no one with that name listed in the Irish Phone book). I did find a 1911 census record which possibly is your grannys family.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for your reply, sorry I have not got back to you until now, but with more research my Granny`s parents were Michael Corocoran and Mary Corcoran, nee Walsh. Granny had sibblings:

    Katherine 14 April 1902

    Patrick 12 Sept 1900

    Ellen 31 August 1903

    Elizabeth 14 May 1905 ( Granny )

    Michael 28 August 1907

I have drawn a complete blank on the Maher family, visiting Ireland at Easter for a bit of a scout around.

Thank you again for your help.

    Reards

Here are the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family. They lived on Kilkenny Street in Castlecomer. There were two other older children Mary and John and since only six of the seven children were living in 1911, I'm wondering if Ellen died young.

    Hello Roger,

Thank you for the census, I have already got that information and like you I can see that there were two older children. I sent for my Granny's birth certificate and the Gentleman at the registry office told me of all the children I listed. He said they were all born to the same Parent's so that is when I looked up the 1901 and 1911 census. I'm guessing that there is no record at the registry office for the two older children because I've been told most records before 1900 were destroyed?

I have joined Ancestry.com for a month so I'm frantically doing any research I can at the moment before my wife and I come over to Ireland in April.

I still have no lead for Theresa Maher ( my Granny always told me this was her sister) Presuming Maher is her married name I looked up Corcoran and Maher marriages but came up with nothing.

As the Gentleman at the registry office never told me of a child being born to Michael and Mary called Theresa I am stuck what to do next.........any sugestions?

I am trying to trace things backwards from my Father but without a lot to go on it is proving difficult which is why I thought I would go further back to when Granny was born and try it that way.

I would really like to know why and when she came to England to live.

It looks like my Father may have had a sister Carmel born 1939 ( one year before my Father James Thomas) that we didn't know about.

So the family tree grows and throws up more mysteries to try and unravel. Any suggestions on how to move forward would be gratefully received.

    Kind regards

    Danny

I don't have any additional suggestions. I did find a civil birth index record for a John Corcoran born in late 1898 in the Castlecomer registration district. Likely this is the record for your great-uncle. I could not find a Mary Corcoran in 1895 in Castlecomer.

  • Hello Roger,

I really apprieciate all of your help and time.

I have looked at some hand written notes that I made several years ago and....... maybe  the family name I am looking for is spelt differently "Maeher" do you think this is a possibility?

    Thank you again

  • i have traced my corcoran ancestors to the castlecomer area and specifically to the crutt townland..... they were tenant farmers on the wandesforde estate and left in 1824 for canada... my g g g grandfather's name was thomas and his wife (my g g g grandmother was mary margaret barron)... thomas' father was named james (we think)

we discovered a topographical map of the castlecomer area dated 1815 +/- and this map shows corcorans and mahers farming near each other

if you are still searching for corcoran information / connections, i would be happy to share what i have discovered to date

i look forward to your reply and best regards
