Bridget Rainsford born 1828 in Castlecomer per UK censuses. I ordered and searched the appropriate LDS microfilm only to find that the page that might have contained the parish record was damaged and unreadable. Bridget and her husband, Joseph Henry Thompson, are found in England in 1851. I have not found their marriage. They were Catholic.Their daughter Mary Elizabeth Thompson was baptised in Dublin in 1850. Bridget died in England. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can proceed looking for Bridget's birth and baptism? I would appreciate any help.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registration of births did not begin until 1864. Unfortunately, the RC parish records for Castlecomer do have a gap from October 1818 thru November 1828. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0981  So it appears Bridget was baptized in the gap period and no record can be found. Did she have any younger siblings?

  • Hello Mr McDonnell,

Thank you so much for taking time to reply. I do not know anything of any siblings or other relatives, including her parents.

My father didn't know the names of his grandparents. I had to dig them out from research of my grandmother's siblings. I do have an old photo of Bridget but none of Joseph, her husband. Joseph was born in England and they returned there.

My father's family left England in 1911. The family appears to have been very unforthcoming with information. I have no living relatives with whom to consult.

I realize that I can't even be sure that Bridget's birth information is correct. It well may be that I have hit a brick wall with the Rainsford side of the family.

  • According to the Irish Genealogy website https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ there are records for Rainsford and Ransford in Castlecomer, not yours unfortunately but it might help as they may have been relatives.

    Hope this of some help.
