My great grandfather, John Derby/Darby, was born in Longford c. 1832.  His father was William and mother Mary Clarke.

He joined the R.I.C. and was posted to Waterford, where he married Ellen Agnes Leahy in Tallow, Co. Waterford on 5th July 1862.

They subsequently lived in county Cork and Cork city.  When John died c. 1900, Ellen emigrated to Boston and lived with her daughters.  She had a son Michael who was a priest in Boston.

Many of the descendants still live there.

Any assistance with the Longford connection would be much appreciated.

  • Dear John,

Further to your message, I have done a saerch of Griffith's Valuation, 1854, which is online at askaboutireland.ie, and cannot find any reference to Darby/Derby. I will check other sources and let you know the outcome.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear John,

I have checked the index to another important source, the Tithe Applotment books for Longford, and find three Darbys listed. Tithe was a tax payable by landholders with land of a certain minimum quality to the Church of Ireland.

There was a Darby (no Christian name mentioned) in the townland of Rath in Forgney civil parish and two occupiers named William Darby in Aughnagresh, Columcille. The Forgney book dates from 1829, and the Colmcille one from 1823, with additions in 1834.

    Best wishes,

    Martin Morris
