My name is Stephen Walsh, originally from Lancashire but currently living in the south of England.

I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather, Edward Walsh, a tailor who was born around 1860-1862. I’m told he was from Ring.

The story goes that he emigrated along with a brother whose name is unknown. We think they went to Australia but may be wrong.  Edward returned to Ireland but the brother remained.

Edward married Elizabeth Keegan in Killucan, Westmeath in 1892 before settling in Dublin. Their marriage certificate shows his father as Edward, also a tailor. Mother’s name is unknown.

My Grandfather, William and father, Edward were both Dublin born.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Stephen

There are 5 baptism records of Edward Walsh Waterford 1861 + - 2 years on www.rootsireland.ie/

    3 are 1862 and 2 are 1859

No luck with Ring or Dungarvan though: 2 1862's & 1 1859 are from Trinity Within RC parish, 1 1859 is from Portlaw RC parish and the other 1862 is from Kill RC parish

However the Walsh-Conway family tree on ancestry.com has Edward's birth as 4 Jun 1862 KILL W'fd

Parents Edmund Walsh and Anastasia Flahaven

I couldn't find their marriage record with Flahaven in the search crioteria but there is a record of a marriage of Edmund Walsh to Anastasia in Waterford 1852 on rootsireland.ie/ The parish is none of those above but Anastasia may have lived in another.

Now it gets interesting: I searched birth/baptisms on rootsireland for Walsh first name blank father Edmund mother Anastasia 1850 + - 20 years and got 7 matches

    Patrick 1851 Mary 1848 Catherine 1856 Joanna 1857 Mary 1860 Brigid 1863 James 1831

Not sure why Edward didn't come up also

I purchased the Kill baptism record of Edward and it has parents EDWARD Walsh and Anasatsia Flahavan Informants James & Margaret Kiersey

  • Thanks Col for your quick reply. We thought that the Edward Walsh from Kill was the one until I found a 1911 English Census record for a Edward Walsh, born Kill 1862 in St. Helens, Lancashire working as a labourer in a glass works at the same time that my great grandfather was in Dublin working as a tailor.
My aunt tells be he was from Ring, an Irish speaking family with him getting in trouble for speaking Irish at school and then English at home.
Of course, he may not have been born in Ring or Dungarvan. Census records simply state County Waterford.
He had four sons, Edward Edmund Michael, Michael Joseph, William and Thomas Francis. Elizabeth's father was Michael and she had brothers Thomas and Francis so the names Edmund, William and Joseph may be connected on Edward's side. Edward and Thomas both died young.
    Thanks again for your time.
