John Kiernan born Kells c.1845 migrated to Melbourne between 1870-73.

Marriage cert. in Melb. gives his father (Richard?) as a mason and his mother as Bridget.

Would be grateful to learn of his birth- and any other records.

I visited Kells some years ago and found Kiernan gravesites in Church of Ireland graveyard  Curious: I thought they'd be in RC.

  • Hi Brian
    I checked www,rootsireland.ie/ for birth/baptisms for John Kiernan 1845 + - 10 years and got 20 matches.
However none is from Kells or has father Richard.
Many do not mention denomination & some are R C.
This is the only 1 with mother Bridget:
Name: John Kiernan Date of Birth:
    Date of Baptism: 12-Jan-1841
    Address: Parish/District: Oldcastle
    Gender: County Co. Meath
    Denomination:
Father: Michael Kiernan Mother: Bridget Coyle
    Occupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1: Coyle Peter Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2: Coyle Margaret

    Oldcastle is 21km from Kells

The Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 22 Kiernans in Meath 1820's & 30's but no Richards.

Griffiths Valuation (freehttp://www.askaboutireland.ie/) has 3 in Meath in Kells parish in 1854 but no Richards

The 1821 Irish Census (free at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/) has 97 Kiernans in Meath but not 1 Richard!
The 1901 has 14 in Kells

This is the only (possibly) relevant death record I could find: Name: Bryan Kiernan Date of Death: 12-Feb-1880
Age: 66 Parish / District: KELLS
Address: Castle St County: Co. Meath
    Status: Married Denomination: Civil Record

    Graveyard Informant
    Graveyard: Relationship: Householder
    Parish: Name: Charles Kiernan
    County: Address: Castle St Kells

  • Hello Col. That was quick! And impressively detailed.

That the mother's surname was Coyle suggests to me that the info. I have has been scrambled. A Richard M. Coyle is mentioned as a parent. Now it seems father of the bride rather than the groom?

If so it would seem that John subtracted a few years from his age when getting married (in RC church)?

    Greatly appreciate your generosity.

  • So the John Kiernan DOB or Baptism 12 Jan 1841 at Oldcastle must be the one? Thanks Col. Any suggestions for getting further info. such as which church in Oldcastle, his father's occupation, whether there were any siblings.

    Again, many thanks

  • Hi Brian

Looks convincing given that the mother's name is right.

As far as the church goes, if you click on Find My Parish at the top of this page and enter Oldcastle you'll be able to post to those experts & ask about churches.

The marriage record above is very poor - often the occupation is included as well as groom & bride's fathers!

None of the other records - Tithes, Griffiths & Censuses have occupations.

I can help with siblings though: (however father's occupation is omitted in all of thses also!!)
