My great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Landrigan/Lonergan  was baptized in Garryrickin (RC parish Windgap) in June 1825. Her older sister Margaret was baptized in Killamery in Dec 1823, and their younger sister Bridget was baptized in Garryrickin in March 1827.

From the baptismal records I found on rootsireland.ie, I learned their parents were James Landrigan (Lonergan) and Ellen (Nelly) Meagher (Maher).  I was not able to find a marriage record for them, nor any baptismal records for them on that site.  Just wondering if that's because they simply aren't available?

Family stories say that Nelly Meagher Landrigan died when the girls were young.  James Landrigan was supposedly a sea captain?  Ultimately, Bridget and Eliza ended up in California.  Bridget was in Napa County, and never married.  Eliza was in San Francisco, married Archibald Lamburth and they had 4 children.

Margaret ended up in Deloraine, Tasmania, Australia.  She married Joseph Bramich, and their descendants are believed to be in Tasmania and Victoria today.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

    Civil registration in Ireland did not begin until 1864 - and church records can sometimes have very patchy coverage - so you're right in thinking that they may not be available. You may however, wish to try records for the parishes near where your ancestors were baptized - as their parents marriage may have been recorded there.

    Some sites that might be of use to you are;

    The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

    The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    You may also wish to contact the genealogy service for Co Kilkenny ar - http://rothehouse.com/rothe-house-genealogy/ (a fee may apply)

    Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
