I am trying to find information on the forebears and descendants of Thomas Sparrow and Elizabeth/Eliza/Alice Coin/Coyne who were married 13th Jan 1814 in St Canice's, Kilmanagh, Kilkenny.  I would particularly like to find out more about their ancestry.  Thomas was alive in 1844 but died before Elizabeth who died 24th March 1864 in Callan aged 80 (so born about 1784) and is buried in Mallardstown, Kilkenny.  She was listed as a widow of Kilmanagh. Nothing is known of either Thomas or Elizabeth's parents, and nothing is known about any siblings Elizabeth may have had.  I am uncertain whether the Thomas Sparrow(s) listed in the Griffiths Valuations are this Thomas or his son.

Thomas & Elizabeth had five children that I am aware of.  1). Frances bap 13 Nov 1814 in Kimanagh, who married Thomas Lewis of Mountown, Co Meath in Oct 1832, and who died 1903 in Enderry, Co Offaly.    2). Susan bap 15 Sep 1816, Kilmanagh.   3). Elizabeth, born 1818, Kilmanagh.   4). Thomas, born about 1821, Kilmanagh, died 6 Nov 1878, Kilmanagh.  He appears to have been the post master in Callan. He married Hannah Thompson in 1848 in Kilmanagh.  She was born about 1828 and died 1882 in Kilmanagh.  5). Francis born Apr 1825, Kilmanagh, Kilkenny.  Migrated to Sydney, Australia in 1844 aboard the ship "Elizabeth".  Listed as a farm labourer, episcopalian and was literate.  He appears to have been living in Shanagolden, Limerick at the time of his emigration.  He became a Christian Israelite, married Caroline Lewin in Hobart Tasmania in 1852, later moved to Victoria and died in Melbourne on 11th April 1890 (he is my 3 x great grand father).

The records in Kilkenny indicate that Thomas (senior) had siblings James, Frances/Fanny & Jonathan.

James was born C 1787 in Kilkenny.  He married Anna Galbraith C1810 and they had children John & Thomas, both born 20 Jul 1812 in Kilkenny, Mary bapt 22 Oct 1815 in Kilmanagh & Michael born 8th Aug 1818, Kilmanagh.  Nothing is known about what happened to Anna, but James and the children were in Canada by 1824 when James remarried Martha Douglass in Quebec.

Frances Married William Wesley Cox in Kilmanagh on 20th December 1803 in St Canices' Kilmanagh. The marriage licence for Fanny and William registered in the Diocese of Ossory and detailed in the "Irish Genealogist" notes that William was a servant, of Pottlerath and that Frances was a spinster from the Parish of Kilmanagh. They migrated to Quebec Canada after 1820.

Jonathan married Rebecca Calbeck before 1828 as they had a son James on 14 Sep 1828.  It is unknown whether this marriage and James' birth took place in Ireland or America.  Jonathan was in New York by 1832 as he married his second wife, Mary McNarland  there on 18 Nov 1832.  They were in Quebec, Canada by 1838.  Nothing else is known about Rebecca.

I would love to hear from anyone connected to this family, and would greatly appreciate any guidance or direction as to how to trace Thomas & Elizabeth's forebears and their families.

Thanks,

Andrea Fitzgerald

  • hi,

i have been researching this family as well. last night i found a marriage record on ancestry.com for jonathan sparrow & rebecca lulbook. that was their transcription of her name, but i think it was calbeck (or some variation). i then found the encyclopedia of massachuestts biographical & genealogical, from the early 1900s, which lists jonathan's wives as:

rebecca kalbach & mary (mclane) hunter (she was listed as being a widow when she wed jonathan).

to answer your question: jonathan married rebecca in montreal, quebec. i have not researched their son james, as i am descended from another child, so do not know where he was born.

this is brand new information for me, so i have not yet tried to trace the wives with what i've learned.

i would be more than happy to exchange information with you. my tree on ancestry.com is public, & i have one on mundia.org as well.

as for mary mcnarland, i am no longer sure that she is the correct one. i'm not discounting her, but i haven't found any reason for them to have wed in new york. from everything i see, after he went to canada, he stayed there. there was another jonathan sparrow who immigrated to the united states (around the same time), so i wonder if this marriage record has all of us fooled into thinking it is our jonathan.

    ~peace, kat

ps: if you were wondering - i descend: jonathan & mary, through charles. he moved to new hampshire & wed mary putnam.

  • Hi Andrea and Rebecca,

His daughter Frances Sparrow is my great great grandmother. I have recently been given a handwritten family tree of the descendants of Frances Sparrow and Thomas Lewis which I will be adding to my open  profile on Ancestry. Their son James (1852-1924) married Elizabeth Warrell and had 8 children I think.

  • My dad's grans name was Prudence Calbeck. The only Prudence Calbeck I have found in Ireland is one born in 1880 in Callan. So the year is right. Have you come across her in your research? I think they immigrated to South Africa.

I am new to this looking up family history. Still trying to find my feet any help appreciate.

    Kind Regards

  • Hi all,

I have only just seen all your replies, although I've been in touch with Kat outside of the Ireland XO site I think. Unfortunately I haven't received any notifications from Ireland XO about your responses.  Thanks for these and thanks, Kat, for the clarification about Jonathan's second wife's details.  Do you have a date and place for Jonathan & Mary's marriage?  It would be good to make the correction to my database with those details, if you can please send me any.

Helen, I'm in touch with Helen Addis, also a descendant of James Lewis & Elizabeth Warrell/Worrell who has given me quite a bit of information on your branch of the family.  Helen provided me with a photo of an elderly Frances so can upload this if you don't have one.  The resemblance to the children of my Francis (Frances' brother) is striking.

Cheryl, Unfortunately my research hasn't taken me to South Africa so how your Prudence might be connected to our Sparrow family is not known to me.

Sorry I haven't responded sooner.  I have a lot of postings on a lot of sites so unless I get a notification about a response I don't know to look.  I will try to make a habit of checking the Ireland XO message board more often from now on.

    Cheers,

    Andrea

  • Hi All,

New to this site.  Also found out I could not use links so described usage in Familysearch.org

I have corresponded to all except Cheryl (Prudence Calbeck) and would like to comment on Mary McNarland and Jonathan Sparrow's marriage.

FamilySearch.org as I don't know if all has membership to ancestry which also has the same records.  It is a bit of a stretch to find record, but I'll track you through it.

    Open Family Search

At the top line click ‘search’

“Search Historical Records” in large yellow letters on dark background appears – DO NOT FILL IN THE BLANKS!!!!!  I learned the hard way!!!!

Instead, under the dark background on the left in the white background look for “Find a Collection”.

Find the box labeled “Collection Title” – type in “Quebec” and a drop-down menu appears

Click on “Canada, Quebec Non-Catholic Parish Registers, 1763-1967

Another window opens with that title Canada, Quebec . . . .

Click on the box labeled “Browse all 278,512 Images”

And voila!  The towns are listed.

    Click on Huntingdon

click on Church of England in Canada

Baptisms, marriages, burials with index 1842-1843

In the black tool bar "Image" type 56

I hope I described it OK

In the record it states they were previously married and are now being registered by the church.  First date of marriage is November 18, 1832 in Constable. NY by Justice of the Peace and the second date is February 16, 1843 in Huntingdon at St John's.

    Record #2

Jonathan marries Rebecca Calbeck in Montreal at Christ Church, November 06, 1827.

Same procedure as above except click on Montreal

then Church of England in Canada Christ Church Cathedral

    Baptisms, marriages, burials 1819-1828

In the black tool bar "Image" type 1191

I hope this clears the confusion.
