    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at all of the civil birth records registed in Co. Kilkenny from 1864-1875 and did not see a Sophie or Sophia English. Did she have a different given name that would have been used when her birth was registered?

  • Hello Lynnielou,

Was Sophia married to Samuel English, of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary)?

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi re Sophia ENGLISH born Kilkenny her birth was circa 1843 died 1919 Leeds West Yorkshire UK

I apologise for giving the wrong information and would like to thank Dave Boyland and Roger McDonnell for your very prompt replies.

My information thus far is that Sophia was my great great grandfather Matthew ROWBOTTOM's careless housekeeper. Sophia comes into my family history in the 1881 census for Huddersfield WestYorkshire. On each census she states she was born Kilkenny Ireland between 1871 and 1911. She married a Richard SIMPSON 25th Nov 1872 although from detail added later to the 1871 census she is shown already married this information is incorrect. At the time of her marriage she was living in Halifax West Yorkshire and I discover other ENGLISH families with Irish roots also living in Halifax. Not made a connection thus far. On her marriage certificate she gives fathers name as John a cabinet maker.  I now come over the water to find from research that Sophia's parents are George ENGLISH and Kate HORGAN and Sophia was batised 12 June 1842 at St. Johns Kilkenny City Kilkenny this is as far as I can be sure. THERFORE looking for any relatives/ancestors to connect with. Now to the careless housekeeper part. My great great grandmother Martha ROWBOTTOM  Matthew's wife died in 1879 and a female child called Florence appears. She is baptised with her so called father being Richard SIMPSON she was baptised 11th Aug 1880 at the same time as an older child called Willie ROWBOTTOM son of my great great grandfather and my late great great grandmother. Later investigation and records appear to be that Sophia and Matthew were the parents of Florence as Sophia was not with her husband at that time and was a servant in the ROWBOTTOM household.

    KIND REGARDS

  • Hi Lynne:

Your research is very interesting, and if you would like to add Sophia as an Ancestor Profile (or any of the others that you mentioned), please feel free to do so at this link:

    https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

There is a baptism record for a Sophia English baptised 12 June 1842 at St. John's parish in Kilkenny (Kilkenny City).  She was a daughter of George English and Catherine Hoyne and her baptism sponsors were: Michael O'Neill and Mary Hickey.  Her name was also listed as "Sophie" and her mother's name was listed as "Kate"..

The digitsed record is at the link:  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635362#page/8/mode/1up  in the bottom right hand side of the page.

Her address was given as Maudlin Street.

I do not see other children born to this family who were baptised in St. John's.  The record that I looked at is a transcription from the Irish Family History Federatioin which is a subscription site.

The best of luck with your research.  If you need any further help, please let us know.

    All the best,

    Jane
