Hello!  I am a descendant of Martin Murphy, born 1833, from Kilkenny, emigrated to U.S. during late 1840's/before 1853, settled in Trenton, New Jersey, married a Julia Murphy from County Cork (1830-1904), served in the U.S. Civil War and died in 1866 due to illness contracted during the war.  In addition to Julia, his widow, Martin was survived by two children, John A. Murphy (1854-1874) and Julia Ellen Murphy Allibone (1856-1942), both of whom stayed in the Trenton area.

Martin Murphy's parents are listed as Patrick and Mary Murphy on Martin's marriage license in Trenton, New Jersey; however, because this license contains some errors, it is possible that these parent names are not 100% accurate either.

Since there are more than one Martin Murphy from Kilkenny during this timeframe, I would like to connect with any Murphy descendants who may have knowledge of a family member named Martin who emigrated to the U.S.

Thank you for your interest and any assistance!

Julie Larkin

  • I am a descendant of a William Murphy who was born 31 July 1844 and baptized in the the parish of Kilmacow, Kilkenny, Ireland.  He came to the  USA, arrived in NY about 1862.  He eventually found his way to Lorberry and Tremont, Pennsylvania. I believe his parents may be James Murphy and Mary Dwyer (see my message board under Kilmacow, Kilkenny). They may have lived in Dunkit. A brother Thomas I nothing of.  Also had a brother John who emigrated with him.  I do not know of any others or they are related to your Murphy, but I do know that one of his sons ( William J. Murphy born 1871), named a son "Martin" (born 1903).  Martin was also called Mark. Martin's story is tragic as he killed one of his brother in a fit of anger when he was in his early 20s.  Very sad story.  Both William and brother John served in the Civil War.  William was Union.  John originally signed up for the Confederacy .  There was a newspaper clipping Missing Friends Irish Immigrants Advertisement found on Ancestry.com where William Murphy(Tremont) was looking for his brother John last seen in New Jersey.  John later moved to Cottage Grove, Minnesota.  It is a longshot but maybe there is a connection somewhere back in Kilkenny.  Aunt, uncle etc. Perhaps my crew knew some of yours.  Unfortunately there are so many Murphys it is hard to find which branch we belong to. Perhaps someone heard a story from the past. Best of luck!
