I am trying to trace my Irish roots. My father was Daniel Joseph Jordan born in 1879/1880 I believe in Co. Wexford. He fought in the Boer war, and settled in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England where he married twice and fathered 10 children of which I am the youngest and last surviving.
I have very little information. In the 1911 census his birthplace is listed as ‘Enniscorthy Resident’. There are two references to his father : as Daniel Jordan, Bricklayer, Deceased. also as Jack Jordan, Brickmaker, Deceased.
My mother was Mary Kate Holohan. I believe she was born in Kilkenny 1889/1900, Her parents were: Patrick born c1877, and Mary Anne Holohan (possible maiden name Walker) born c1882.
During the second world war she and my father’s mother were neighbours, but I do not know where.
I would be grateful if anyone can help.
Mary Burnand formerly Jordan, email gburnand@gmail.com.

Hi Mary,
Thank you very much for your message.
Civil registration officially started in Ireland in 1864, so given Daniel and Mary Kate?s year of births you should be able to find their birth records in civil records. These would give you their parents? names and also help you find/confirm parish of origin which will open further avenues of research to you. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records up until 1958 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
Have you tried looking in the Irish 1901/1911 census records to see if you can find the family? These are available online athttp://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search
Some other websites that you may find helpful are:
The National Archives of Irelandhttp://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

It may also be an idea to contact the Family History Centre in Kilkenny for some assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email:kilkennyfamilyhistory@rothehouse.com
Remember to post any new information that you find here, especially in relation to parish of origin. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
