Hello!

My Walsh ancestors came from Kilkenny and I am interested in any connections and information we can share.

My GG Grandfather, Thomas Hines Walsh was born in Killkenny in 1847. He emmigrated to Albuquerque, New Mexico and died there in 1909. He married Bridget Ellen 'Nell' Motley who was born in Carlow on 25 Dec 1851. She died in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1937. Thomas arrived in the United States in 1860, he and Nell married in 1875 in New York. By 1886 they were living in Albuquerque, NM. Thomas was a stonemason and worked for Santa Fe railroad. Together Thomas and Nell had 6 children. I know Nell had one sister, Annie Motley. I do not know if Thomas had any siblings.

My GGG Grandfather, Lawrence Thomas Walsh, was born in Killkenny in 1818. I do not know when he died nor where. Lawrence Thomas Walsh married Elizabeth 'Bessie' Hines who was born in Killkenny in 1823. I not know when she died nor where.

I do not know if the Walsh family was from the City of Killkenny or just from the County.

I would love to connect with anyone who thinks they have some information on the family and I always love to share information and stories!

Thank you for your help!

  • Hi there,

Could you please post your message here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-carlow

Unfortunately it is very difficult to point you in the right direction without knowing where exactly they are from.

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Perhaps you need to check the records stateside to glean more details. This might give you the lead you need in order to carry out further research. Have you tried checking the death notices in the newspapers there from that time?

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
