Hi, I am tracing my Trehy family line from Kilkenny and have hit the dreaded brick wall. My ggg Grandfather Edmund Trehy (c 1765 -1825) married Catherine Nowlan (c 1770 - 1840) sometime around 1796 and had three children that I am aware of, John (my gg Grandfather), Patrick, and Andrew. If anyone has any information on this line it would be greatly appreciated. See attached family chart.

  • Hi Paddy

There are 5 baptism records for Catherine Nowlan in Kilkenny 1770 + - 5 years on www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site)

    1770, 1769 & 1772 are all from SLIEVRUE R C parish

    2 from 1767 both from St Mary's R C

    1773 from St Canices R C

I found 4 baptisms for children of Edmund & Catherine - first 2 with the family address as Patrick Street & from St Patricks R C parish: James & Nicholas TROY both 3 Jun 1803 (twins?)

    Andrew TREHY 11 May 1801 St Canices R C Patrick TREHY 3 Nov 1798 St Canices R C

I couldn't find Edmund's birth until I searched for Troy:

    The only 2 records for Edmund around 1765 were from Limerick & Laois I'm afraid (1765 & 1767) & I couldn't find a marriage record.

  • Col, thanks very much for your efforts and the information. I gather you have a subscription to RootsIreland and therefore can view all records without additional outlay. I have been with RootsIreland for years and purchased credits as needed. I actually had found the records for all of the above but had only purchased the ones for Patrick and Andrew as I was able to link them directly to Edmund and Catherine. I also found the twins Nicolas and James but had not purchased the records as I was not sure if they were related. Based on your information I used my last 50 credits to purchase these and as a result have not added them to my tree. I know from grave inscriptions that there was a further sibling, John, who was born circa 1797 but I cannot find his birth record. John is actually my gg Grandfather. Interesting you say you found a record for Edmund in Limerick. I have long suspected our Trehys originated in Limerick and this may be the vital clue that might prove that connection.

Once again Col, thanks very much for your help.
