When Bridget O'Neill was married in 1844 in Marysville, Ontario, Canada her parents are listed as James O'Neill and Margaret Ring of Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.  While researching the Thomastown parish records there were entries for James Neil/Nail/Nelle and Margaret/Peggy Ring of Thomastown.

Baptism records show a Bridget Niel, baptised 30 Oct 1812, parents James Niel and Margaret Ring at Thomastown, sponsors Edmund Gaul and Bridget Riley/Reilly.

Three other names have been found in the Thomastown parish records as well:

Margaret Nelle baptized May 20, 1802 parents James Nelle and Margaret Ring.  Sponsors Thomas Naile and Mary Cahill.

Michael Nail baptized Oct 29, 1806 parents James Nail and Peggy Ring.  Sponsors ?Nell Cahill and Mary Riley.

Michael Neil baptized Apr 25, 1810 parents James Neil and Margt. King.  Sponsors John Reilly and Mary ?Shorthal.

A witness to Bridget O'Neilll and George Howson's marriage in 1844 in Marysville, was John Gaul.  In researching the Thomastown Kilkenny parish records a Mary Gaul was baptized Nov 10, 1806 and the parents are listed as Edmund Gaul and Jenny King.  On 7 Feb 1793 an Edmund Gaul married Joane Ring.  It is possible that the Gaul family is related to the O'Neill family.  Margaret Ring and Joane/Jenny Ring could be sisters or cousins.

I also found this inscription on the Thomastown inscriptions list

Neill: Erected by James Neill of Smithstown in memory of his wife Margaret Neil alias Ring who departed this life January 6th 1844 aged 68 years. [Colmkill]

I would like to know when and where James Neil and Margaret Ring were born and married.

No ages or parents' names given I'm afraid.

    There isn't a Thomastown birth/baptism for James.

    No luck with Margaret either

  • Hi Jerri and Col:  I am interested in this post as my gr.gr. grandfather Patrick Walsh, was born in Mong, Thomastown, and settled around Marysville, Ontario (1803-1875).   He is buried in the Marysville Cemetery.   Also, his mother's name is Mary Reilly. We also have Walsh ancestors buried in Colmkill.    Unfortunately I don't see any Neil's or Rings in my family, although my mother was a friend of an Anna Wringe in Marysville when we lived there.

So, unfortunately, while I can't add to your history, I love the coincidence that we are looking in the same areas, and our families likely knew each other a couple hundred years ago.

  • Hi Mary Beth:

Do you have any Hamilton or Flood names from Kilkenny?  Michael Neil/O'Neill born abt 1810, parents James Neil and Margaret Ring, also came to Belleville.  He married a Margaret Hamilton b  abt1828 who was also from Kilkenny.  Her parents were Patrick Hamilton and Margaret Flood.  I  believe Patrick and Margaret Hamilton  lived in Belleville.

  • Hi Jerri:  Sorry, I haven't yet connected with either Hamiltons or Floods -- but I'll keep them in mind.
