I am seeking information from anyone knowing of a Butler farming family from Kilmanagh, Killaloe in the early 1800s.  Son William became a priest and eventually a noted scholar at St. Kieran's College.  He was assigned to Thomastown as a parish priest in about 1847 where he died in 1848.  We believe he is the uncle of my great-great grandfather Michael Butler of Bennettsbridge (or possibly Thomastown) who emigrated on his uncle's gift of money to the US in 1848.  Would like to find out more about William's background.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Hav you tried looking in Church records for information? Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which you may find helpful is the irishtimes website where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Kilmanagh/Kilaloe/Ballycallan parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Kilkenny&parish=Ballycallan&churchid=969

You could also try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance.

You could try searching for the family name in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records complied between 1823-1838. You can search these online here:

Some other website which you may find useful are:

You could also try contacting the genealogy centre in Kilkenny for assistance-however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

    Rothe House,

    Parliament Street,

    Kilkenny.

    Phone: +353 (0) 56 7722893   Email: kilkennyfamilyhistory@rothehouse.com

I hope that this is helpful. Best of luck with your research.

  • Hello,

My Great Great Grand Uncle was Fr William Butler B 1803 Killaloe, Co. Kilkenny D 2 May 1848, was professor in Kilkenny College and Parish Priest of Thomastown where he died.  There is a monument to him there.

My branch descend from his brother Edmond (Edward) Butler who married and settled on his in-laws farm in Knockeenbawn, Kilmanagh, Co. Kilkenny.

I just came across your post.  I'm not sure how we get in direct contact. I have some of the family tree back to 1734 and forward to this century.

    Regards, Mark.
