I am trying to find the birth record of my great grandmother Mary Grace born c1870, on her marriage record she named her parents as Michael Grace and Johanna Costigan of Rutheagh which I have been told doesn't and never has existed. My family still live in Urlingford but unfortunately they can't give me any more information.
The second name is Callaghan, my great great grandmother Bridget Armstrong of Kings County reputedly married two brothers Michael and John Callaghan. Her children were born in Kilkenny town but then lived in Urlingford as per 1901 census. Again some of the Callaghan family still live in Urlingford but cannot give any further information.
I have found family graves up at the mill and have some old family photos but the records I cannot find have been brick walls for quite a few years now. Hopefully someone out there might have some information that could help me.
Thanks

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I think the townland you are looking for is Rathreagh in Erke civil parish which is just to the north of Urlingford. I looked at the 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Erke parish and there were a number of Costigan records but only one Grace record-- a Rev. Pierce Grace who lived in Rathreagh.

I was unsuccessful trying to find any records for Mary Grace. I searched on www.irishgenealogy.ie for a civil birth record for Mary from 1864-1874 and did not see a record with the parents of Michael Grace and Johanna Costigan. I looked at all records in the northern and central part of Co. Kilkenny.
I then went on Roots Ireland and there were no baptismal records for Mary with those parents. I assume your family was RC?
The RC parish for Erke civil parish is Galmoy and records start in 1861.
Any other clues? Siblings etc.

Hi jkingsford52,
Just to add another possibility, I looked at the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Grace in all of County Kilkenny and found a Michael Grace and a William Grace in RATHBEAGH townland in Rathbeagh Civil Parish, which is about five miles northeast of Urlingford. Attached is a list of all the Grace head of households in Kilkenny during the Griffiths Valuation.

I found a possible link that might be worth following up - a death in 1895 of a Michael Grace reported age 77 (est. year of birth 1818) in Johnstown, Urlingford Civil Registration District, occupation is labourer, and the informant is Johanna Grace his widow - Death of Michael Grace 10th March 1895 (see entry 144 on the register image).
There only close match I found for Johanna on the 1901 census at Rahillakeen with several of her children - including a Mary Grace but born c1881..
Johnstown is located about 4 km north of Urlingford, and Rathreagh about 10km to the north of that, Rahillakeen is some to the located well to the south of the county, about 70km and near to the town of Mullinavat.
