I am tracing my family tree and am trying to find relatives on my paternal grandmothers side. Her grandfather was a Thomas WAUGH b.1845 at Carrigallen. His wife was Sarah b.1848 at Carrigallen (maiden name unknown). Both came over to England and settled in the Darlington area of Co. Durham. One of their sons was Francis Joseph WAUGH b.1876 in Darlington, Co. Durham. This was my grandmothers father. Thanks in advance for any information you can offer.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

What was the religious denomination for the Waugh family. I did a check from 1840-1850 on Roots Ireland and could not find the baptismal record for Thomas. Did Thomas and Sarah marry in Ireland?

Roger, First of all thank you for the very quick reply.

I must just correct something, their son was Francis Joseph WAUGH b.1876 in Darlington, not Thomas.

My grandmother was of the Catholic denomination, but not practising.

I believe his parents Thomas and Sarah were married in Ireland as I cannot find a maiden name or marriage record for them, but I am unable to confirm this.

The family first appear on the 1881 England census, but records show that Francis was born in Darlington, Co. Durham, England in 1876. I attach a photo of Francis with my late father. Other children in the family were Susannah, Frances and Cathrine.

Many thanks for any information you can provide.

Thomas and Sarah were married in Ireland in 1872 in the Carrigallen RC church. Her maiden name was Magrath. See the transcription below of the civil marriage record which shows the names of both fathers-- Thomas.

By the way, I tried to look at the online parish register for Carrigallen and it is not in good condition.

  • Roger,

Thank you very much for your time and effort in finding that information. Much appreciated. I have just been looking at Carrigallen on Google Street View and wonder why they left, seems very well to do. Might have to pay it a visit.

  • Hi Sharon, Thanks for contacting me.

Just checking the family tree that I have made it would appear that your grandfather Thomas Raymond Waugh and my paternal grandmother Winifred Maud Waugh were brother and sister. Did your grandfather go by the name of Raymond rather than Thomas? I ask as I was out in Darlington with my father many years ago when we bumped into his "uncle Raymond". I have their mother recorded at Edith Bramley rather than Bromley

Thank you for getting in touch. Do you live in Darlington? We split our time between Darlington and Spain where we own an apartment. My mam is still alive and lives on Cockerton Green so we get back quite often and we own a place near Carmel School.

    Best wishes and thanks again.
