I am looking for information on my grandfather Joseph White and his siblings who were born in Carrigallen and later came to the U.S.  My great grandfather was Edward White, and he was born on May 1st, 1871 in County Leitrim.  I do not know my great grandmother's name, but would love to have any details on the family.

    Hi Kerry,

Thank you very much for your message.

Have you tried looking for Joseph?s birth record in Carrigallen parish? If you could find this is would also list his mother?s name.

Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Carrigallen parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Leitrim&parish=Carrigallen&churchid=820

For Church of Ireland Records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/

You could also try searching for Edward?s marriage certificate for more information. A good website where you may be able to find both this birth record and marriage cert is Family Search. This is a huge database of genealogical records that has been compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. You can search this here:

    www.familysearch.org

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you may also find these records here. Civil registration records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records online at Family Search again. Here is the link:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

Have you tried looking into Joseph?s emigration? Sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure so this may be a place to find more information. For immigration records in the US check the National Archives at  http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

You could also try searching the 1901/1911 census records to see if you can find any family that remained in Ireland. You can search these here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

    The US National Archives: http://www.archives.gov/

  • Hi Emma,

Thanks very much for your reply.  Since my original posting, I have found out a bit more information on my lineage.  My grandfather (Joseph White) was actually born in the U.S. and then later brought back to Carrigallen with his Father (Edward White) and siblings (Gertrude and MAry White) after their mother (Annie Rourke) died in Lowell, Massachusetts.  Annie was in her early 30's and there had also been 2 other children who did not survive (Edward and John) who are buried in Lowell, Mass. with their mother.  My great grandfather (Edward White) was the son of Hugh White, and had siblings Patrick and Hugh.  Within one year or so of their return to Carrigallen, the father Edward White died and is buried in Carrigallen in a family plot.  The children eventually made their way back to the States, but I am not certain of dates yet etc., but will check some of the research sites you referenced.

I know that Annie Rourke was also born in Ireland, but I am unclear if she too might have been from Carrigallen, or if perhaps she and Edward may have met in the States.  If you have any other suggestions, or the names sound familiar - please share any thoughts.

    regards,

    Kerry White

This is Kerry White again, and I am resuming my ancestry search for the White family of Carrigallen.  (long hiatus) Attached is an image of the headstone of some of my ancestors: Great Grandfather Edward White (died 21 May 1913), his father Hugh White (died 17 February 1880 or 27 February 1879 - there is conflicting info between wills and headstone) and his mother Maria (died 20 September 1930) Any information available on the White family of Carrigallen would be immensely appreciated.
