I am looking for the Ancestors of Robert Wallace, b. 18 Apr 1841 Manorhamilton d.1926 Otago, New Zealand, and his wife Margaret Maley b.c1839 Tawneymanus, d. 1905 Otago, New Zealand.  Roberts parents were William Wallace, b. c 1801 and d. 1889 Townymanus, Cloonclare, Leitrim, Ireland.  We have a copy of his death certificate. Williams' wife was Mary Stewart b c 1814, and d. 25 Mar 1898 Tawnymanus, Cloonclare, Co Leitrim, Ireland.  She was buried Church of Ireland, Tawnymanus, Cloonclare, Co Leitrim, Ireland on 27 Mar 1898.

Margaret Maley's parents were Thomas Maley and Hanna Wallace.  Perhaps cousins.

I have searched familysearch.org and found almost nothing.  Also used various other websites to no avail.  Irish research is incredibly difficult from New Zealand.  Especially when you are on a pension and unable to purchase documents easily.  I am a member of http://www.rootsireland.ie/  which has been very helpful when I can afford the credits to use it properly.

If anyone can find out anything about the above people I would be very grateful.  We have quite an extensive tree from the above people downwards, but going back is difficult.

I might also add, out of the children that left Ireland with Robert and Margaret, there is only two living people with the surname.  I have used my maiden name on this site, but I have one 1st cousin and his son who are the only ones carrying the name out in New Zealand.  The other children were girls and of course changed thier names upon marriage.

  • Hi Ali,

Thank you very much for your message.

Unfortunately it may be difficult to go back further than Robert and Margaret?s parents as the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. The bulk of what does exist is usually in Church of Ireland registers as this was the official church of the country at the time.  Most of these records are still held locally although some are in the National Archives and the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here is a link to a list of Church of Ireland Registers in the Representative Church Body Library, Dublin

It may be an idea to contact Leitrim Genealogy for some assistance, however please note that there will be a fee for their services. Here is their email: info@leitrimroots.com

I am sorry I could not be of more assistance. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Ali,

I just found your message re Robert Wallace.  William Wallace took over my family farm, from Felix McMorrow, in 1845.  I have some info on William and your family, but did not want to send it at this late date if you are no longer searching.  If you are, please let me know.  The best way to contact me is through my email (sdmcmorrow@att.net) because I will not necessarily remember to look on the Irelandxo site for messages.
