John Higgins and Catherine Flynn  lived in Modorragh townland in the Parish of Inishmagrath near the village of Drumkeeran), . They were the parents of 9 children.

All but one emigrated to America and they spread out all over the country. Michael and Hugh Higgins settled in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa. Sarah (McCort) and youngest sister Catherine (Carney) settled in New York City. Patrick joined the Union Army and died in the Civil War, possibly at Chattanooga, TN. Owen settled in Springfield, IL. Mary(Keaveny) and Anna went to California where they both married. Anna moved with husband Patrick Moloney to Portland where they raised 5 children. the youngest son John stayed in Leitrim and married Ellen Gallagher of Deryycullinan, but their family seems to have all died out except for his son Patrick (wife Anne Cassidy of Coolegrean, Dowra), who settled on Staten Island, NY. (But I may be wrong.) Other children of John Jr were Mary, Sarah, Margaret, Michael, John, Ellen (mar. Michael Guihan), Owen and Kate (mar. Tom Padden).

I have a large list of their descendants but I would be very interested in learning about their lives in the parish, if anyone knows.  And can anyone help to flesh out this story or tell me if there were any other descendants left in the area?

  • Hi Ann

I took an interest as I have Leitrim ancestors and googled Inishmagrath to see where it was in Leitrim and found a parish website here http://www.inishmagrath.com/contact.html I note under the history section that a book was written about the place but probably likes hens teeth to get as these books are usually one offs and you either have one or you do not. The local Leitrim Library in Ballinamore may help see http://www.leitrimcoco.ie/eng/Services_A-Z/Library/Local_Studies/Search…

There is not a lot of stuff printed about Leitrim or photos. There is a short booklet on the parish of Kiltrubbid published by Maynooth University and some other small bits I also see there is a short 1970s youtube video shot for TV on the place.

The mention ofhte French General Hubert is interestng as he faced General Cornwallis who lost the Americas in 1776.Was obviously demoted to Leitrim.

    Must rush.
