Hi!

Does anyone know if the rent books still exist for Glackaunadarragh for the 1820s and 1840s, and if so, how they could be accessed?

My ancestor Francis Layden was born in Leitrim around 1815. He moved to Sligo at some point and then immigrated to Scotland (Maxwelltown) between 1845-1850. His sister Ann also went to Scotland about the same time. Their father, also called Francis, was described as a “crofter” in Ann’s Scottish death certificate, and Francis junior was an agricultural labourer and had been a seasonal agricultural worker in Scotland before he emigrated.

There is a Francis Layden in the 1834 Tithe Applotment Books for Glackaunadarragh which I think could be Francis senior. But Inishmagrath parish records only run from 1834-1839. I found references to a Francis and an Ann Layden as witnesses to other events, but nothing conclusive.

If the rent books for Glackaun are still available for this period, this could perhaps tell me the actual plot my ancestors lived on, when they left, and who had the plot afterwards (maybe a long-lost relative whose descendants are still around).

Hello again. I don't know about rent books being available. However, the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Inishmagrath parish shows five Leyden records in Glackaunadarragh. See link below. Also, www.askaboutireland.ie has a Griffiths data base where you can see a lot more info about the properties. Subsequent to 1858 there are revision books which show how the properties changed hands as people died or left. These books are in the Valuation office in Dublin. Hopefully they will be digitized at some point. I also looked at the 1901 census for Glackaunadarragh and there were eight differnent Leydon families in the townland.

  • Hi Roger, thanks for your message.

I have already looked at Griffiths, as well as the 1901 and 1911 censuses. But my ancestor left Ireland between 1845 and 1850. Almost half the tenants listed in the Tithe Books for Glackaun were Laydens, and unfortunately I can’t connect the people or the plots from the Tithe Applotment Book with those in Griffiths.

If I could identify the plot that Francis was renting when the Tithe Books wre made, and if this stayed in the family after he left, it would be very interesting to track the changes through the Griffiths revision books and maybe find some long-lost relatives. But right now I don’t know the plot. I was hoping the rent books might help if they were still extant.

Sadly, almost all the Laydens in Glackaun had left by the early 20th century.

  • I don't know if you've already seen this, but you might want to check out Patrick Brennan's genealogy site out; you have some cousins in common and he's got a lot of additional info out http://www.donmouth.co.uk/family_history/rowanhist/webrowanhist.html
