Hello,

My name is John Blest and I have been researching The area around Drumkeeran for close to 40 years and have amassed considerable information about this area. My mother's family named FLYNN was from Tawnahoney townland in Creevelea as the half-parish was known. My Grandfather was John Flynn and he was born in Tawnahoney in 1877 to Hugh Ruadh Flynn and Jane Watters. My Flynn relations in the area of tawnahoney, Gowlaun,Altivra and Geaglom include Sweeney,Doherty McGowan, McNiff, McCauley.

My father was born in Brockagh in 1891 and his father Myles Blest was born in Tonlegee. My grandmother was Alice O'Hara who was born in Aughrim (Coolegrane) in Innismagrath Parish in 1864. My Blest great grandparents were Michael Blest and Rose Dolan and my O'Hara Great grandparents were Peter O'Hara and Anne Mawn of Aughrim,Coolegrane.

I have a group called Drumkeeranfolk on Yahoogroups with 350 members from around the world with roots in this area. There are some local Irish members of the group. You are welcome to join it if you are researching this area

  • Hi John - I joined your Drumkeeranfolk group on Yahoo Groups.  I look forward to reading all the information that is posted and may be able to help others with their search.

One site I find interesting (being in the Boston area) is the New England Historic Genealogic Society @ www.AmericanAncestors.org.  They will be offering a class in January and I mention it because there may be other locations around the world that offer something similar to help people start out.  I am hoping it will help me search for my grandparents family.  An example,

    Upcoming Education Programs
    Getting Started in Genealogy
    99–101 Newbury St., Boston, Mass.
    Wednesdays, January 16, 23, and 30, 6–8 p.m.

How do you get started in genealogy? There are plenty of websites, libraries, and printed sources out there, but access to all that information can leave a beginner feeling overwhelmed. Let an NEHGS expert help you navigate the first steps in tracing your family history. Senior Researcher Rhonda R. McClure will share her knowledge and helpful strategies for beginning your family history journey in this three-part course.  Tuition: $30 for full course (three sessions).

Thank you for responding.  I appreciate it.

  • Hi John,

I know you posted this ages ago. I hope you still check on this thread every now and then. I just found out that my family is from the Drumkeeran area. My great grandfather's name was John Flynn he was born around 1869 to John Flynn and Bridget Doherty. I know that my John Flynn definitely had siblings named Ann & Owen. I believe there may have been a Patrick, Peter & Thomas as well.

I am not sure if this fits in with any of the Flynn's or Doherty's that you have been researching in the area.

  • Hello John if you are still watching this board.  I posted on another board "Michael McNiff".

I'd be interested in any info about your McNiff's in Drumkeeran.    There is a Patrick McNiff who came from Sligo on the Dromahair with his spouse, Winifred, and child Catherine.  They landed in NYC in April 26, 1850.  After spending some time in Vermont, likely with relatives (Gavins and/or Gallaghers) them ended up in Penn Yan, NY.  Three generation of thereafter had a son named Francis Miles McNiff so I am assuming that Miles or Myles McNiff may have been his father, brother or uncle.  I found a number of Myles McNiffs in Inishmagrath via Griffin's Valuation.  Whether any are related, I don't know.

Any info on your McNiff's would be of interest.  I passed thru Drumkeeran this last Fall while helping a local friend, Sean Kelly, find some of his relatives in that area.   Thanks!
