Is anyone researching the Laydens of Killanummery Parish?
My 2xgt grandfather Francis Layden left Ireland in the 1840s, with his wife Winifred Kerins and their daughter Mary. His parents were Francis Layden and Mary Hart. He came from county Leitrim, and based on DNA and other evidence it now looks like his birthplace was in Killanummery parish.
19th century valuation records show three Laydens in the parish:
Tithe Applotment Books (1834):
- Thomas Laden: Garvagh Glebe
- John Laden: Moher (a sub-townland in the northern part of Beagh)
Griffiths Valuation (1856):
- Patrick Leaden: Beagh
Beagh and Garvagh Glebe are right next to each other, so these Laydens were probably all related. This is where my Laydens probably came from.
Killanummery church records start in 1829. They show several families of Laydens in the 1830s and 1840s, but there is nothing after 1846. So it looks like the Laydens all left, except for Patrick in Beagh. My own Laydens left between 1845 and 1850.
There was another family of Laydens in Killanummery from the 1870s, who came from Rosses Point. I don’t know if these are related to the earlier Laydens.
I would be interested in comparing notes with anyone who is researching the Laydens of Killanummery parish.

Hi Clare,
Thanks for your comment.
Griffiths Valuation (1857) shows that Patrick Leaden (the last Layden living in Beagh) lived right next to a Bryan White. Bryan white's wife was Mary McLoughlin. They were married 1844. They had children Patrick born 1852, Mary Ann born 1853, Bridget born 1855, Elizabeth born 1858, Thomas born 1863, and probably other children I couldn't find in the church records.
Could that be your family?
Regards,
Iain Layden
