Hi there,

I am looking for any information that may include my great grandparents Elizabeth Arnold and Edward Dale, before they emigrated to Canada.  And any pertinant information about their families.  I am hoping to be able to find family connections that may still be in the area ( if possible)  and how they may have lived.  Myself, I am very much into history, so this interests me very much.  They may have also moved to the county of Cork before they emigrated to Canada.  Which is where I am also asking for information.  This is where I received some information as well.

I have provided what information that was sent to me on another message board.

Thomas Dale and wife (unknown)

Their son:

John Dale, born 30 June 1777 Londonderry, Derry, Ireland  died 19 June 1860 Shawville, Quebec, married Elizabeth Wilson born 1772, Ireland, died 16 Aug 1856 Shawville, Quebec

Their son:

Edward Dale, born about 1797, Ireland, died 29 Nov 1888, Pontiac, Quebec married Mary Lemman, born 1792 Down, Ireland, died 15 Mar, 1861 Pontiac, Quebec

Their son: which is where chart ends

Edward Dale born 15 Jan 1837 Pontiac, Quebec, died 22 Jan 1926 Shawville, Quebec, married Elizabeth Arnold, born 22 May 1841 in Newtowngore, Leitrim, Ireland, died 31 Oct 1918, Shawville, Quebec

Welcome to the IrelandXO Co Leitrim Community!

Newtowngore Co. Leitrim has Arnolds living there still.

Your best bet would be to link in with Newtowngore National School who have an Arnold in their employ.

This school also has an online collection of stories (recorded by Arnold children in the 1930s) who interviewed their elders about life in the 19th century) which should be of interest to you too.

Also, link in with St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Newtowngore which has Arnold headstones in its cemetery. Apparently Edward Arnold (c.1780 - c.1854) who lived in Newtowngore, was the town blacksmith [Source]

On the 1830 Freeholders list for Carrigallen parish you have a strong Arnold landholding in the townland of Cullies:

Willliam Arnold, Thomas Arnold, John Arnold & Richard Arnold all with houses and land held under a will at Cullies. Robert Arnold of Drumkeewick (adjascent) also held land at Cullies under two wills. This matches up with the Tithe applotment records, where you will find additional Arnold landholdings in 1834

Please also join the parish of Carrigallen and post your ancestors details there.

    Best of luck!

    Good Day Rua!

    Whow,

That certainly is more than I was expecting.  Thank you thank you thank you!

I have searched for years for information to no avail.  I know nothing of my great grandparents, and now, maybe I will.

I really can't thank you enough.

    Hi Colleen & Rua,

If you can believe it, I was in Carrigalen and Newtowngore on May 10th and 11th (just days before you posted this) , exploring and looking for traces of my grandma's family.    My grandma was from Cloonboygher, Newtowngore, Co Leitrim.    Her mother was an Arnold and her father was a Houghton.    My grandma's Arnold's were all from Drumbrick and Cullies.      Joseph Arnold married  Margaret Jane Harrison who was from Cloonboygher, Newtowngore.  Joseph Arnold was born abt 1832 and Margaret was born June 11, 1869.     We've lost track of the Arnold's and irish Houghtons since my grandma died.   My last picture of Drumbrick was taken in the 30's which was described as a "Drumbrick row house you know so well".    My grandma was given a New Testament by the Church of Ireland in Drumreilly in 1909.   It was amazing to spend an afternoon in those old grounds, wondering if my grandma was as taken back by the ruins there as we were.

If by chance you run across any Arnold history from the early 1900's on, please let me know.    I am so excited to pursue the links Rua shared.

I wish you well in your search.   If you're on Ancestry as well and would like to see my tree, please let me know.   Rua, any insight you can give me I would appreciate it.

    Blessings to you both,

    Marylou Shaffer
