Does anyone know if anyone is working or done any cemetery transcribing in the Mohill area? I am looking for the surnames O'Donnell and Duke. I know my great great grandfather, Michael O'Donnell, died in 17 November 1867. And his wife Anne (Duke) O'Donnell died 4 January 1901. I was hoping they might be buried in a family plot and may be able to lead me at least one set of GGG Grandparents.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I would contact Mohill parish and find out who manages the cemetery records and go from there. http://www.mohillparish.ie/

Hi Lynn
As Roger knows I take an interest in things Mohill and just to say that about 10 years ago I had a grave search done by Leitrim Genealogy in Ballinamore who have a copy of all the headstones in the county as it was done on one of the employment scemes back some time ago, there is a charge.
The reason I actually came on line is that circa 1937 and 1938 there was a schools collection of folklore done in every school in the land and it is slowly been put on line and I have just been perusing the Leitrim schools and if you follow the attached link and select County Leitrim and look over the school names on the right hand side of the screen you will see a school listed as Mohill (2) there are other Mohill listed and click on it and then on the little tab saying More Information it gives a list of children who supplied stories, I realise it is long after your time but there are at least 3 different Duke children listed and a number of stories from each, just a nice read and possibly relations as it is an ususual name.

I have also found the local studies section of the Leitrim Library very helpful and recently a couple of books based on different schools around Mohill have been printed, there is an Excel sheet on the Local Studies section of the library listing stuff they have also.
Hope you enjoy it,

Hi Roger,
The problem is I am not sure if they are buried in a Catholic cemetery or a protestant cemetery? My GG grandfather was baptised in the Church of Ireland, but in the US he was Catholic. His sister in Leitrim was baptised in the Catholic Church as an adult. All of his siblings in the US were catholic so did their parents convert too? Most likely for the GGG grandparents I would be looking for protestant cemetery records.

Hi, I was in Mohill last weekend in the Church of Ireland searching the records and the cemetery and found 1 O'Donnell buried there and lot's of Duke's going back into the early 1700's. Some of the headstones are very difficult to read and I intend to return. The Duke Family were a substantial and wealthy family as shown by their headstones and are also related by marriage with the Crofton Family, they both originate in England and came to Ireland in the 1500's. Hi Lynn
I recently came across a Facebook page Leitrim Genealogy and at the top is a page to download and add a surname, I see someone has added a Duke and gives an email address.
Just in case you are interested.
