Tom:
The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household shows that William Hamston was in Creenagh townland in Cloone civil parish.Cloone parish was just to the east of Mohill.
On the subscription site Roots Ireland, I found the March 6 1836 baptismal record for Patrick Hamson father William and mother Margaret Mahon. The RC church was Gortletteragh which is part of the Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. Here is a link to the current parish website
William and Margaret married in Gortletteragh on March 2 1835. I also saw a Patrick Hampson marriage to Jane Brady at Gortletteragh on January 23 1859. No witnesses shown.
There was a William Hampson who married Bridget Farrill on June 8 1879 at Bornacoola church. Bornacoola church covers Mohill parish. It looks like William died because Bridget Hampson a widow married Thomas Connelly on October 10 1896 at Bornacoola.
You may want to consider DNA testing.

Roger-thank you..this confirms and adds some detail to my research....I believe my GGGF William Hampson died in the Mohill Workhouse in Sept. 1892 ..can you point me in the direction of cemeteries in theMohill area that he and his wife Margaret Nahon-Hampson might be buried? I have done both AncestryDNA and 23ANDME dna testing .

This YouTube video from last year will be of interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZtIf2DAeSo It is a drone video of the cemeteries in Mohill parish. Your ancestors could be in St. Patrick's Old cemetery but very unlikely there is a marker/headstone.

After I sent my comment, I went back and looked at Margaret Hampson's death record and she and William were still living in Creenagh townland in Cloone parish. William's death record says he was from Creenagh also, The Mohill workhouse covered people living in Mohill, Cloone and Fenagh civil parishes. There was a hosptial at the workhouse so when he was sick they sent him there. Thge question is did his body go back to Cloone parish for burial.
Here are the Cloone cemeteries https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery-browse/Ireland/County-Leitrim/Cloon… but I still think it is unlikely there is a marker/headstone.
