I am trying to find information on my Great, Great Grandfather John Leslie who I believe is buried at Mohill and died in 1886. He married a Margaret Harper in 1847 in Dromara and my Great Grandmother was born in Mullaun in 1849. Her name was Sarah Jane Leslie and she sailed to NZ as a young girl with her brother.

Are there any relatives still around this area?

  • Hi Catherine

If you don't get any responses from the site, there are 3 Leslies and 3 Harpers in Leitrim in the irish phone book (just google it and search Residential.

  • My 2nd great Aunt was married to James Henry Leslie(Born 1849) They married in 1898 and lived the rest of their lives in Mullaun. They did not have any children. My Dad remembers the house as his father lived in it for a short while. The house is still in Mullaun, in different ownership. There is a grave belonging to the Leslie family in Annaduff Church of Ireland graveyard.  I'll check the names on my next visit. Annaduff/Mullaun are very close to Mohill.

  • Hi Ferg28 - Thank you for your response. It is so nice to have so many helpful people trying to get me in touch. I have photos of the house I think from 1951. If you are happy to give me your email address I can send them to you and you can tell me if this is the house as I know the photos were taken in Ireland and my father says they were taken at  the family "home",  We are planning to come to Ireland in 2017 and come and see the grave sites and the area where my ancestors are from. Col explained earlier that there were names in the residential phone book and although I tried to find the phone book had no luck:) As I don't know much about the family I do not know if the names that  helpful Jack Mcdonald gave me are related but if it is a small town I guess they are :).  From the date of James Leslie birth I would think that he is a brother of my great grandmother Sarah? My email address is catherinehrubos@live.com.au. Please could you tell me the best time of the year to come to Ireland bearing in mind I am not used to the cold :) Thank you so much to all you kind people for your assistance. Jack McDonald has told me that there is a death record for my great great Grandfather in Mohill, John Leslie born 1814 died 1886 and I think his Father was a James Leslie but do not know who he married. Would have been born in the late 1700's. Kind Regards Cathy.
