My great-great-great grandparents were Hugh Reynolds and Jane Carrol.
Their daughter Jane married Edward O'Brien @ 1849. They were all from the townland of Killamaun near the market town of Mohill in Leitrim. The Earl of Leitrim was their landlord. Jane and Edward's daughter Bridget was my great grandmother. The whole O'Brien family emigrated to NYC circa 1860's.
Edward had a brother named William who murdered a James Gallagher around 1856 or earlier.
I am looking for any information regarding this murder. Who was James Gallagher? What happened, when and where, and was William executed, exonerated or transported?
Please email me at durner1@gmail.com as I am not sure I'll be able to navigate back to this spot again!
Thanks so much.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in newspaper archives to see if you can find any information on this murder? Leitrim County Library have a newspaper archive. Here is the local studies department?s webpage:
http://www.leitrimcoco.ie/eng/Services_A-Z/Library/Archives/Local_Studies.html
You can also search some of their newspaper archives online:
There is also a large Irish newspaper archive database available at http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/ You can carry out searches for free but have to pay a small fee to view actual articles.
The National Library of Ireland also have a huge newspaper archive. Here is their website:
http://www.nli.ie/en/catalogues-and-databases-printed-newspapers.aspx
You could also try looking on www.findmypast.ie to see if you can find any record oin their histricl records or newspaper archives. I did a quick search for James Gallagher and a result came back dating to 1855 which could be relevant. However you have to pay to view these records:
I hope this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
