Looking for info on John Gilhooly c.1835  (v.approx) and family.  He married a Ellen Callaghan date and place unknown.  He is listed as a roof thatcher in his son John's death cert.  They had these children -

Patrick 1861 Edentennay, Oughteragh (not yet verified)

Bernard 1862 Fenagh (not yet verified).

John b.1869 Aghadark, Oughteragh, married in Belfast in 1891  and  d.1935 Govan, Glasgow.

William Aug 1871 (can find no birth record) d, 1908 Brooklyn, New York.

James b.1872 Stradermot, Oughteragh.

Mary Catherine b. 1874 Ardrum, Oughteragh d. 1940 Tradeston, Glasgow.

John (1835) seems to have died before 1891 according to John (1869) marriage cert but I cannot find a death record. I think Ellen his wife may be on the 1901 census as a lodger, vagrant and imbecile at Dramore, Garadice, aged 60.  On the 1911 census I think she may be at Chapel Street, Ballinamore 76, a lodger, imbecile.    I cannot find a death record at all.   It's quite frustrating as both John and Ellen's death should be in the civil registers.  She was still alive in 1897 accroding to her daughters marriage cert.

  • Hi, I'm just taking a look at the Gilhooly's. Is your Patrick the same one on the 1901 census below?

  • In the US, I have a distant match on Ancestry named Ingoldsby. She told me the name was from Leitrim and was also previously known as Gilhooly.

  • Sorry I have only just seen these replies.

Re: Patrick in the 1901 census, I'm not sure.  I can find no trace of him except his birth so far.  I will have a dig around and see if I can find a marriage record for him which might help.  And a look at the sister Ellen that's listed.  The only thing that makes me slightly doubtful is him being listed as a farmer, I would have thought a labourer of some kind or at best a trades person but I could be completly wrong.

Re: the link for James's birth - yes definitly is, Thank you  :).  Though oddly it's listing Co. Cavan wheras he was definitly born in Co. Leitrim as I've seen his birth cert.  And there is definitly a Stradermot, Bawnboy in Leitrim https://www.townlands.ie/leitrim/carrigallen/oughteragh/ballinamore/stradermot/

Re:  Ingoldsby, that's intresting I've never heard that before.
