Looking for information, any relatives of John Broderick.  I believe he was born July 2, 1887, and was baptized on July 5th, 1887 in the Parish of Abbeyfeale by the Rev J. Curtin CC (?), and his sponsor was Johanna Collins.  His parents were Michael Broderick and Julia Doody.

Thanks so much!

  • Thank you all!  This information appears to be consistent with info I have.  John Broderick (the baby) was my granddad.  He emigrated to the US and lived in Washington DC and Maryland.  I am quite new to geneology research, and would like to locate where he actually lived in Ireland, and also whether or not there are any living relatives still in the area.

  • You can see where Dromtasna North is using the maps on Griffiths Valuation:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

You can search for people of that name in the general area in the current phone book:

  • RE:  John Broderick

It’s possible he is the brother of my grandmother Ellen M. Barry (nee Broderick), born about 1889.    She was from Knocknasna, Abbeyfeale, but then moved to the Bronx, NYC.   Ellen had some brothers who also came to New York--Michael Broderick in Brooklyn and James Broderick in the Bronx.   There was a sister Mary Broderick (I don't know her married name) but I met her son Teddy who was born in America.  Children of another of the Broderick siblings included twin sons (my father's cousins) who I believe were also born in America.  My father’s aunt and uncle once visited us from Ireland (Paddy and wife Non (Noan?)—they may have been Brodericks too (Patrick?).  I have ordered my grandmother’s death certificate hoping it will give more info about her birthday and birth location, but any info would be welcome.

  • Just got the death certificate for my grandmother, Ellen Broderick (from Abbeyfeale).  Her parents are listed as Patrick Broderick and Nora Kelly.  Any relation to the family you are researching?

  • Hi McOdwy,  I have more info now and it looks like your John Broderick is a different family.  My John Broderick was born on    15 October 1885 to Patrick John Broderick and Nora Broderick of the Abbeyfeale area. (I see town names Abbeyfeale, Port and Knocknasna, and the birth record lists Newcastle.)  As I am researching I'm learning that there are many Broderick families and many of the children have the same names.Best of luck in your search!  -- Pam Barry

  • Re: John Broderick DOB July 12, 1887 in Dromtrasna North, Abbeyfeale, Limerick (aka my grandad Jack who lived with us in DC until his death in 1976).

I recall him corresponding with a niece named Bea Fitzgerald in Abbeyfeale - at least through the early 1970's. Would anyone have any suggestions how I might track down any relatives that might still be in the area?

I am traveling to Ireland this summer, and will be driving through that area and would love to see at least the area where he lived before he left in the early 1900's. I do not know how to match the dwelling info/location from the 1901 Ireland Census to any current locations on a map. I can only find a number for the house on the 1901 Census ("No. of House or Building". Also, would anyone know what appears to be "DO" indicates on the 1901 Census, Form B.1. "House and Building Return" in the column "Whether Built or Building"?

    Thanks so much!

  • The DO on the form B1 of the census is short for ditto meaning the same as a previous entry, do incdicating that theirs was a private dwelling (as opposed to a school, church or other public building.) The numbers on the census are not house numbers as such but relate to the sequence of the houses met on the enumerators walk around to deliver the forms.

To help find exactly where your ancestors lived I would ask in the nearest pub and post office for input.

  • Hello there mcosdwy, I am Jennifer Jean and I am from the Abbeyfeale area, I happen to know quite a few of the Brodericks, some who live in the same village Tournafulla - as I do myself.

There are a few of the Broderick family still in Abbeyfeale and in Knocknasna, (this particular family are good friends and live in the UK but keep the cottage for visiting family and for when they come home for holidays etc).

If you can let us know when you wil be here I can make sure that one of the Broderick family are available to meet you or I will myself.

I look forward to hearing from you

Hello there, I was looking through your history and wonder whether you received any further information from Bill Broderick in Abbeyfeale since we last spoke. I sent him your details as he is in league with another Broderick cousin who has done heaps of work on the \brodericks of Abbeyfeale/Dromtrasna area.

We would be really interested in your family history for the chronical pages - if you did manage to complete your searches - do let us know. Good Luck

  • I am the grandson of Thomas J Broderick (Born 1912, Abbeyfeale).  He had a brother and a sister.  He and his sister came to the US circa March, 1929.  He married Margaret Salmon.  His neice Margaret (Rita) Hogan, from Abbeyfeale, recently passed December 31, 2016.  She had two children, David and Eileen.  David, I believe, is in Listowel and Eileen is in the family cottage in Abbeyfeale.
