William Coghlan is my great-grandfather and was born around 1797 in Adare. He married Catherine Walsh in Croom,in 1832.They had 3 children who were born at Baurnalicka .I presume this was a large estate. They migrated to Australia in 1838-first to Sydney, then onto Melbourne.Eventually they settled on a farm near the town of Warrnambool in 1843 in the Western District. They died there:he 97 and she 103 years young!
Does any one Out There recognise William or Catherine?
Cheers
Jim Coghlan

Dear Jim,
Baurnalicka is a townland in Adare in Co. Limerick. Son Thomas born 5 April 1833, Michael 16th February 1837 and son James born 3rd March 1835 all born in Baurnalicka indeed.
Looking at the tithe applotment books for Adare 1827 I see only one Coghlan family registered there, an Andrew Coghlan living in the Adare townland of Curraghbeg. Possibly Williams father or another relative.
I have checked the Adare baptism records for William Coghlan but had no luck locating this.

Thanks very much Anne-Marie.This is my first post on this site so I am very impressed with your quick and informative response.I am going to Adare in 2 weeks . There is a Barnalick guest-house there - do you know if it is the same property where my ancestors were born?
Regards
Jim

Hi Jim,
Barnalick Guesthouse is a 13 min walk from Baurnalicka but in the same townland. Only a couple of fields between it
In the time of your ancestors there were 10 occupants in the townland, mostly farmland, and it is still mostly farmland
I check if I can find the Coghlans in the Tithe applotment register (tax payers records) and try and find out what property they lived in

I can see a record of a William Coghlan in 1830, but he is not living in Baurnalicka townland, but in the townland of Ballinlyny in the parish of Ballingarry Co Limerick. This is only a 10 minute drive from Baurnalicka so this could be him, he might have moved after his marriage

Andrew Coghlan was head gardener in Adare Manor i the 1830s - he wrote ‘A brief Description of the Gardens at Adare, the Residence of the Earl of Dunraven, in the County of Limerick’ for The Gardener's Magazine and Register of Rural & Domestic Improvement, Volume 2 (Longman, Rees, Orome, Brown and Green, 1836), p. 450-452, via https://books.google.ie/books?redir_esc=y&id=oUBNAAAAYAAJ&q=Adare#v=onepage&q=Coole&f=false ... hope that helps, Turtle
