My grandfather James Hurley arrived in Detroit Michigan in 1906 at the age of 16, destined to his uncle, Michael Hurley. He left behind his father, John Hurley and brother Mark. I have information about his family but nothing about his Mother's family other than her name was Mary Sheahan and she died when he was a young boy probably around 1893-1896.
I would be most interested in any information about the family.

  • I found a Sheahan and a Sheehan families in 1901 living on Main St. in Askeaton. I also found the Hurley record.

There are also other Sheahan families in Askeaton so you may want to do a search. www.nationalarchives.ie

  • john hurley & mary sheahan, year 1888,

were married in cappagh parrish (RC),

that would indicate that mary sheahan is a native of

cappagh, as marriages were usually in the brides parish.

add cappagh to your PARISH list on

(IRELAND REACHING OUT) & you will be notified

by email of any messages on the cappagh board,

john hurley may be a native of askeaton,

as that where the children were baptised,

    JAMES 1888,

    MARK 1890,

    ELLEN 1898

    REGARDS

    JOHN.

  • Thank you, the information regarding Mary Sheahan, it is a great lead. I will add Cappagh to my parish list. I never knew about Ellen 1898 so it is possible Mary died in childbirth and possibly the baby as well.

My great grandfather John Hurley lived in Askeaton but the family was from Lismakerry which I believe isn't too far away. His parents were James Hurley and Ellen Mead.

I have visited Askeaton and was fortunate to have my cousin Dan O'Connell show me around!
