Hello
I am researching my ancestors James Ambrose and Mary Magrath, both of whom list Limerick as their native place. It is possible they may have lived in the Ballingarry region.
James Ambrose, born approx 1817, arrived in Australia on the ship Brankenmoor on 3 December 1841. James was a bounty immightant brought to Australia by Jonathan B. Were of Kent & Co. His calling was as a House Servant.
Mary Magrath, born approx 1822, arrived in Australia on the ship Mary Nixon on 30 November 1841. Mary was a bounty immigrant brought to Australia by Jonathan B. Were of Kent & Co. Her calling was as a House Servant.
As James and Mary arrived in Australia 3 days apart, and were brought to Australia by the same person, it is possible they already knew each other as they married 2 months after arrival.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information regarding this couple.
Thank you
Cath Young

Cath:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The closest baptismal record for James was in 1824. See below. There were many Magrath/McGrath baptismal records in Limerick but none in Newcastle West.
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Hello Roger
Thank you for your reply.
When I look at the ages on James' 1890 death cert , for marriage and years in Australia, it would have him born 1814 or 1817. If he was 24 on the shipping records of 1841, this would have him born 1817. Do you think the record you have found is probably him, or should I keep searching? By lookin at the map, I see Ballingarry is only 12 miles from Newcastle West.
On Mary's death cert. it names her parents as Daniel McGrath and Mary Grady. Sorry I forgot to add that probably vital piece of information.
I have a Mitochondrial DNA report from my maternal cousin and I have had th FTdna test done.
Kind regards

No lick with Mary. I located an 1820 Mary Magrath baptismal record with father Dan but the mother was Mary Keane. Baptism in St. Michaels Limerick city.

There is a group of Ambrose Descendants from SW County Limerick on Facebook. There is a lot of good information available plus we are comparing DNA results of the members to try to determine which Ambrose family line they are descended from. This may be of help to you in finding information about James Ambrose.
