Hello,

I understand that my forebears, Richard Austin and Margaret Hoban/Hoben were married in Ballybricken on 7th Jan 1844 at the Church of the Holy Trinity (within) John Hoban and Mary Power were witnesses. I'd quite like to know if they had any children baptised here or nearby if that's possible.

By 1853 they were settled in Newcastle upon Tyne and Richard worked as a glass-maker there. The census record states that they were both born around 1825 and were from Waterford and that they had a child/children born in Ireland. Ann Austin was possibly born in Ireland... not sure if that was in Waterford or not or in Ballybricken. Later, in 1846 they had a Mary Austin born in Dublin around 1846 and then a John in 1848 in Waterford, apparently. Finally, James in 1851 in Waterford. Seems that they moved around a little, doesn't it? Presumably Richard was looking for work.

Any help would be gratefully received.

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

The parish you want on our site is Trinity Without which is sometimes shown as Ballybricken but is different than the Ballybricken in Co. Limerick. You can join Trinity Without if you like but no need to post a new message.

I checked on Roots Ireland and did find Anne and James in Trinity Without and the transcriptions of their baptismal records are below. John did not come up but you can look on the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1091  around 1846 to see if you can locate him.

  • Gosh! That was swift! Thank you so very much, Roger. I hadn't realised that there were two Ballybrickens and that Limerick wasn't one of the places they were located.

I see two pairs of other names... John Hoban and Ellen Brien, John Power and Johanna Hoban as  'Informants' and also the term 'Sponsor' ... as a non-Catholic would these be similar to 'God Parents' in the C of E?

Finally, I now realise where my maternal great grandmother's name is from... she was Johanna Austin...so it comes from either Margaret's immediate family (mother or sister), most likely, or a member of the wider family. How lovely!

    Kind regards for your help,

    Gilly

John and Ellen and John and Johanna were sponsors or in the current day-- godparents.
