Great great great grandfather John Gammell, a weaver of Bruff, married Catherine Bennett on the 26 February 1813. They had four children at least, Bridget, 05 February 1814, James, 15 December 1815, Ellen, 22 June 1819, John, 24 December 1820. James moved to Tipperary town and married a Margaret Downey, a farmer's daughter. In 1840 he and his wife emigrated to Australia and settled in Parramatta NSW. At some stage his sister Bridget joined them. The two had families and have descendants in the area today.

Hi Philip,
I am helping the descendants of Gammell's from Co. Limerick, and I believe specifically from Bruff. I would not be surprised if their Gammell family and your family were connected. They too have They have done extensive DNA testing and I'm curous to know if you know of anyone in your Gammell line has done any DNA testing as well.
Also, you might be interested to know that your John and Catherine Bennett Gammell had an additional child named "Catherine" in Limerick in 1826. Catherine was baptised on 4 June 1826. Let me know if you would like more information about this.
Regards, Adam

Hello Adam. Sorry but no contact I know of has done a DNA test. Gammell is my mother's family, but I am not in touch with any family members at the moment. I am happy to share research results. I have a tree on Tribal Pages, and have written on family members at my blog, phillipkay.wordpress.com, a site called bestquest. If it seems relevant I can send you a pdf of relevant areas of my tree, or a gedcom if further details would be of interest. At Bruff I have parish register entries of the marriage of John and Catherine Bennett and of four children. A witness to some of these is a William Gammell who could be a brother of John. Of the children three, Bridgeet, James and John emigrated to Australia. I am interested that you have found a fifth child, Catherine. Regards, Phillip

Bridget Gammell emigrated to Australia with her brother James in 1840. She was 27. She was a dressmaker from Limerick, but I don't know if that was town or county. I don't know of any marriage in Ireland, though that would have been usual. She married in Australia in 1842. There seems to have been several Gammell families in Bruff, all slightly later than the one I know of, but I don't know what the connection is.
