Hello,I am looking for any information on Mary Cotter and John Browne who may have married in Bruree or in surrounding parishes. They moved to Firies parish Kerry around1820s-30s?. They may have had 7 or 8children. There is anecdotal evidence that Mary Cotter may have been related to Coll fami
ly ofDeValera connections. Any leads would be greatly appreciated Thanking you in anticipation,JR.

    Dear John

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I have found a Roman Catholic marriage record for a John Browne and Mary Cotter on irishgenealogy.ie, a free website. They were married on 31st January 1838 in the parish of Schull East, Cork. Witnesses to the wedding were Ellen Donovan and Ellen Barry. Unfortunately neither set of parents names are recorded on the marriage record. Does this information correspond with what know about the couple or could they have been married earlier? Can you estimate a year of marriage?

A further search of Irishgenealogy lists the names of a number of children to a John Brown and Mary Cotter including:

    Anne 1839 Schull

    Margaret 1842 Schull

    John 1846 Schull

You can have a look at these as the names of the sponsors might mean something to you. One issue however, is that there seems to be more than one family of Brownes. If your Mary and John were in fact married in 1838 then they cannot be the parents of a Patrick Browne born to parents of that name also in Schull in 1831 and also recorded on irishgenealogy. I have no way of knowing at present if the above children are siblings of Patrick and therefore not the children of your Mary and John or if they are their children and Patrick is from another family. There is also a baptism for a daughter born much earlier in 1808 so perhaps she is the correct child in the parish of Hospital? An estimated date of marriage for the couple would narrow the search.

  • dear clare, thanks for your reply.any one of names you mentioned dont seem to tie in with any information that i already know of. while i still think the family that i want infomation on came that area around bruree - hospital etc.its likely that mary cotter and john browne were married before church records were recorded in those parishes. if you are lucky enough to come upon any new information in the future i would be grateful if you would pass it on to me.sincere thanks, john reidy.
