My great grandmother Mary Sheahan married John Hurley 1888 in Cappagh. They lived in Askeaton. In 1973 my mom visited Ireland and mentioned visiting with cousins John and Mary Madigan " way out in the country in a thatched roof house". At that time he told her it was the house where Mary Sheahan was born. James Hurley, her son is my Grandfather.

Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for the Hurley family. Mary died in 1898. The death index record is below. I also found the 1888 marriage index record for Mary Sheehan and John Hurley. You can get copied of this record by writing to the GRO www.groireland.ie  Fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of the event, the registration district and the volume and page number. Cost 4 euros each.

  • Appreciate your response and links, just a bit confused. Below the two census links you sent is a list of info to be filled out, but there is no info included. Is it a sample or should her record be there? So curious to find her parents first names and mothers maiden name. Thanks!

I made a mistake by copying two copies of the death index record instead of one marriage index record and one death index record. The correct marriage index record is below. These records are index only but you use the data to write to the GRO (see link above). The GRO has a form you fill out and then you advise them where the death or marriage is recorded. For example, the marriage record is registered in the Rathkeale registration district, Jan-March 1888 quarter in volume 5 page 395. You have to provide that information so they can go get the record and copy it for you. Same with the death record. Let me know if you have more questions.

By the way, the marriage record shows where the bride and groom were living and also their father's names. The mother's names will not be shown.

  • G'day,

My great grandfather was Patrick Sheahan, son of Dan Sheahan and Mary (Madigan).  Patrick was born approx. 1837 and emigrated to Australia approx. 1857.  I have had no success thus far finding any information on Dan Sheahan or Mary Madigan.

  • Joining this discussion a bit late ...   I have one Mary Sheahan, born in Askeaton to John Sheahan and Bridget Russell on 27 April 1856.  John and Bridget were married in Cappagh in 1853.  Siblings to Mary were Edmond, Bridget, John, Patrick, Johanna, Anne and William.  Unfortunately, the 1853 marriage record did not include parent names for either John or Bridget.

With the passage of time, have any additional discoveries been made about your Mary Sheahan?  Are the names of her parents known?

    Best wishes,

    Lynn Sheehan Dougherty
