Hello all,

Patrick Roche (b: abt 1815) & Frances Roche Nee Gubbins (b: 8 june 1820) resided in Charleville in the 1840s.

They had 5 children: JAMES (b:1839),  Lawrence (b:1840 D/I), Lawrence Gubbins (1841-1913), Robert (b:1842 D/I), and Robert Gubbins (1844- 1898).

Whilst they lived in Charleville, Cork,  they were known to have a strong links to County Limerick.   What are the neighbouring Limerick Parishes closest to Charleville?

I am keen to track down any (I) marriage record for Patrick & Frances

                                               (II) death records for Parick, Frances and son James

Post 1864 deaths seen to be recorded by Registration District - eg, Mallow, Fermoy,  If the above were in the Charleville area when they died which  Registration District would most likely be applicable?

Do the death registers contain any additional information about the deceased such as parent, spouse, sibling names or address etc?

    A death in Charleville would be registered in Kilmallock.. Irish death certs don’t contain a huge amount of information. Date and place of death, name, sex, marital status, age, occupation, cause of death and informant’s details. No parents’ names except sometimes for a child where it may say “daughter of….”.

    Adjacent RC parishes to Charleville in Co Limerick Ballyagran, Bruree & Effin & Gamenderk.

  • Hi Kevin,

    My name is Anne Marie and I am the parish admin for Churchtown (10 minutes away from Charleville)

    Found the marriage record for Patrick and Frances, they married on 25 February 1838 in the parish of Solohead & Oola in Co. Limerick it was very common for a couple to get married in the hometown of the bride, so this could be the Limerick connnection

  • Think I made a mistake, the marriage in Oola is between a James Roche and Frances Gubbins, strange enough no marriage to be found for a Patrick Roche, wonder if the name James is an error in the transcription of the record

    Thank you both for your replies - I shall continue to seek out any death records from the neighbouring parishes mentioned.  The Frances Gubbins- Patrick Roche marriage in Oola is the closest that I have been able to trace - I also suspect that a transcription error is a possibility.  Patrick Roche is my GG Grandfather, Robert Roche 1844-98  is my G Grandfather who migrated to Australia and lived at Osbornes Creek, near Yackandandah in NE Victoria, Australia. Whilst his birth is registerd in Charleville CORK, his headstone in part reads "native of County Limerick". This has always been confusing until I recently dicovered that the Parish of Charleville extends across the 'border' into Limerick

    Yes both parish boundaries often cross county borders. Similarly the civil registration areas do so too. So you frequently get a birth in one county registered in another.

  • Hello all again

    Can you help me confirm the location of Ballyhubbo/Ballyhabba a townland?/village?  - it seems to be just south east of Charleville.  Are there any present day landmarks or other identifiers?

    Also can you help me locate an area/village called Rocheville which I believe may have been east of Kilmallock or in Killmallock? Again are their any present day landmarks or other identifiers?
