This is my grandmother's grandfather, and I'd like to learn more about his family in Ireland. His date of emigration is uncertain but he settled in the Mohawk Valley of New York and came to the United States in time to honorably serve the cause of the Union in the American Civil War: mustering as a 22 year old Private in the N.Y. 24th Cavalry in 1864.
Could any of my friends in this genealogical community point me in the right direction to learn more about his birth family?
Many thanks!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Do you know anything more about James? Parents names or siblings? The baptismal records for the RC parish of Croom start in 1828 and are included on Roots Ireland but when I searched no record was found. Here is the parish register

Possibly he was from a parish close to Croom which does not have records available back to 1842. For example, Banogue parish to the north of Croom has records starting in 1861.
Let me know.
