I am searching for information on the origins of my g3 grandmother Mary Kelly (~1812-1854) of Glin, Limerick.

Her tombstone says that she was the daughter of John and Bridget Kelly of Glin, Limerick. Mary immigrated, probably to the Boston area, sometime in the 1830s. She married Michael McDermott (probably of Roscommon), and in 1840, they had a son Thomas in the Wisconsin Territoy, and then finally settled in Galena, Illinois the following year. Mary (nee Kelly) McDermott died in Galena at the age of 42.

The name John Kelly appears twice in the 1830 Tithe Applotment books - once in Caheragh (Cahara) and once in Tullyglass. The name appears four times in the 1852 Griffith's Valuation - twice in Caheragh, once in Tullyglass and once in Killacolla/Barker (on Mill Street). I see that the Parish records go back to only 1851, unfortunately.

I am not sure if Mary Kelly had any siblings - thus far, her trail is very scant in America. But, perhaps the names will match with someone's research and we can put our heads together. You can reach me here or at: thomas.lloyd.mcdermott@gmail.com

Thank you!

  • Dear TL:

Many thanks for your post and welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out message board!

Unfortunately, the parish registers for Glin only begin in 1851, so it is highly unlikely that you will find a baptism record for your Mary Kelly.  You might consider tracing some of the Kelly families in Glin to see if there are any connections that may be made.  It is interesting that her headstone gives her home parish and that is great information to have.  You might look at the Historic Graves project to see if there are Kelly headstones in Glin graveyards.  Their website is:

    http://historicgraves.com/

In addition, you might also look at Griffith's Valuation and the Civil Registration records for any deaths of Mary's parents in Glin.

    That website is:

The best of luck with your research!

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

    Dear Jane,

Happy Paddy's day to you, as well, and many thanks for your suggestions. I'll check into them today.

I'm attaching a photo of my g3 granmother's headstone. Maybe someone will come across my information here someday and find a match.

    Best of everything!

  • Dear TL:

Thanks for the photo.  Would you consider creating a profile for that?  I can if you like.  Let me know.

The XO Chronicles feature (button located at the top of the page) allows users to create Ancestor profiles, Building profiles or Timeline Event profiles.  It's very easy to do.

It would be great if you would create an Ancestor (People) profile for Mary Kelly.  You can use the headstone as her photo.  Every week, new profiles that have been added are featured.  If you have any difficulties, please email me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

The best of luck with your research!

    All the best,

    Jane.
