According to their death certificates my relatives John Mulcare and his wife Mary Normoyle were married in Glin iand left for Australia in the 1850's. My great grandmother Kate Mulcare was born in Glin in about 1852. After many years of searching I can find no records anywhere in Ireland. Any help from anyone? Please.

**It would appear that Mary Mulcare neé Normoyle’s mother was a Culhane. John Mulcare’s brother was possibly Morgan. Any clues please.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched Roots Ireland from 1847-1857 and did not find the baptismal record in the Co. Limerick records. The Glin RC records start in October 1851 so if Kate was baptized prior to that date, there would be no record available.

  • Thanks for that Roger. Looking at John and Mary Mulcare's death certificates John died at age 63 in 1883 and seems to have been born in Glin before records. Mary died at age 59 in 1881 which also places her before Glin records. Their death certificates state that they were married in Glin when John was 30 years old and Mary 29 years old. So married about 1852.

John was 31 years in Australia in 1883. Mary was 29 years in Australia in 1881. Are you able to direct me to any shipping records of leaving in 1850s?

Mary's mother was Margaret Narmile and her father was Patrick Narmile. Is there any place I can begin to look for anything recorded about them - or John's father also named John Mulcare?

Kate (Catherine) Mulcare's death certificate states her father was John Mulcare - farmer and her mother was Mary Normoyle (whose mother was Culhane).Kate's certificate states she was born in Ireland and died in 1917 aged 66 but 64 years in Australia - which makes her about 2 when she left Glin in about 1850-2 baptism again before Glin records. Can you give me any hint as to where I might try my search?  I will be in Ireland in April and hope to do some leg-work. Am I able to visit you for more discussions?  Thanks - Therese Kearney

  • Therese:

Have you tried www.askaboutireland.ie to search the Griffiths Valuation records? The survey was conducted in 1850 for Limerick. Maybe you can locate the two fathers named John.

I live in the States so we won't be able to meet up. I don't have access to my files currently but when I do, I will see if I can make some research suggestions.

I had a hard drive crash and I'm now starting to catchup with messages. I checked the Tithe listings but did not see any Mulcare or Normoyle/Normayle records in Kilfergus civil parish which includes Glin.

Good luck with your research and your trip. I will see if I can locate a local contact.

  • Well Roger - living in the States makes it a bit of a problem to meet up!  However I am very grateful for your efforts on my behalf. If in the future you do come across Normoyle/Narmile or Mulcare I'd love a lead - anything! Thanks - Therese

  • Therese, hello. I am descended from John Normile, who was born about 1835 in Caheragh, Glin, Ireland. On the Caheragh Tithe applotment for Caheragh, there are Culhane family noted. We are most probably related. Altho my John Normile emegrated to Cincinnati, Ohio and had son Matthew and daughter Mary Normile, 1862 & 1863. Will look forward to hearing from you, fellow Normoyle Normile, Mary

  • Hello fello Normyle Mary.  How great is this!  I live in Victoria Australia. Where are you? We have Culhane and I think Sheen in our Mulcare/Normoyle family. Our John Mulcare and Mary Normoyle are my GGGrandparents and Margaret Sheen is, I think, a GGGGrandmother. My John Mulcare in the early 1850s migrated to Australia with his wife Mary Normoyle and 2 daughters Kate and Margaret and they had more children when they came to the Dandenong area in Victoria. Kate is my Greatgrandmother who married Joseph Pickett.  I did not know of the Caheragh townland but will certainly be looking.  I hope we can maintain a link and keep in touch. Your distant-cousin Therese

  • Therese,  mom and I are working on the Normile tree right now and my grandma's name was actually Margaret Normile.  That is when i noticed the Culhanes were on the same census or something.  I am also on facebook.  Look for the Mary statue  with the greenish light.   Mary Fey  park hills ky

  • Patrick Normile is found in Kilfergus tithe applotment record.  In the area of GLin/ Kilfergus there are 3 Patrick Normile. One is Tooraree Upper which is Henry Normile is located also.  His son John Normile  moved to Orleans county New York along with some of his sibblings.  I have a tree on him on ancestry and I think he is a cousin to my John Normile from Caheragh.  this is because his mother is Mary Mcnamara and my John Normile cousin is Ann Normile who married Thomas McNamara.  They lived in Caheragh 1 mile east of Glin.  Their children settled in Detroit michigan.   These are my John Normile's cousins......John Normile, my mothers great grandfather was born about 1834 about.....Hannah Normile McNamara was John Normiles cousin or sister.  It is interesting that she named her first daughter margaret, probably after her own mother........Hannah Normile we found on Caheragh Kilfergus Glin death records indicate her birth was 1813.   Mary

  • Oh there are sooooo many similarities!! I do so hope we are related. It would be great to find a connection. When they migrated to Australia they brought the names with them. Our John and Mary had quite a few daughters including Ellen and Brigid also Kate and Margaret. The first babies Brigid and Ellen died and 2 more daughters were also named Brigid and Ellen. A son James died as a baby and another John married but had no children. So our Mulcare line died with him. Many offspring from the daughters though!  Hopefully we can keep in touch. All the best. Therese

  • Hi, Therese. I started a tree for your Normoyle on ancestry. Are you on there at all? I also sent an invite on facebook to someone but I am not sure if it was you or somebody else.....Do you have any pictures of your family relations ? I have some. We could share these either on ancestry or maybe facebook or even on here? or email......then we could see if our relatives look alike......I also have other Normiles I have met and they are my friends on facebook......these are ideas to solve the great Normile mystery.....Mary

  • This family crosses mine at a couple of places. Mary Normoyle's mother is Margaret Culhane. There are many other siblings of John Mulcare who came to Victoria. John's parents John ( some are saying James) and Margaret Sheahan.

  • There is information on this family in the book "West Limerick Families Abroad" by Kate Press and Valerie Thompson- printed in Melbourne Australia in 2001. page 148 & 149 would be a good starting point in this book. Mary Ellen

  • Checked all  the Normoyle/Normile families in my data base only have one James born in 1903. Because his wife could be a Culhane, there is a book called "Home Thoughts from Abroad" by Thomas Culhane published in Ireland I think  by the local historical society, there is a good section on how the Culhane family fits to-gether. • Hi,

This post caught my eye because I also have Normile/Normyle in my tree. Here's what I have:

Margaret Normile b1845 Adare, married John McMahon. The family moved to the U.S., looks like New York/Pennsylvania.

Margaret's parents were: Simon Normile b1812 County Clare and Bridget McInerney b1815 County Clare.

Wondering if there are connections or if this is a different Normile family.

    Cheers!

    Wendy
