Looking for any info on my relatives from Glin!  My 3rd great grandfather John Shannahan was born Glin, Limerick abt. 1780, had 7 children Bridget b. 1798, Dunnaman, John b. 1801, Glin,Thomas b. 1812, Catherine b. 1808 or 1815, Edmund, Nora & Elizabeth, all born Glin, Limerick.  Johns wife may have been Hanah ?, born 1775, Glin, & may have married abt 1797 in Glin. John and his children (no mention of wife) came to Canada 1832, & 1833 & settled on farmland in Medonte, Ontario, Canada.  Would like to know more of the Irish family history, who his father etc may have been.  Thank you for any help!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, the RC records for Glin parish do not begin until 1851. The civil parish would be Kilfergus. I checked for Tithe records but did not locate a record. Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Hi, There are 2 John Shanahan in the Tithe records in 1830, one in Flean and the other in Cahara, these are townlands in the Parish of Kilfergus.
Not many deaths were listed in the Church Records, the Civil records were introduced in 1864 for all BDM.

  • Scarlett, I'm familiar with the family members that settled in Medonte, John and his wife Margaret Mangan, Thomas, Edmund (appears he did not survive), Honora and Elizabeth. I don' know much about their history in Ireland except that I suspect they were from the Caraha townland in Glin parish.

  • Thanks, I just realized Honora is Nora! I had a Nora but no Honora.  I havent been able to find where John's father John born around 1780  who came with kids to Medonte died. He is listed in 1871 Canada census as living with Thomas (my line) & Elizabeth but cant find death info. Would appreciate any info you might have!

  • John, born 1799 died on Sept 8, 1871, his wife Margaret Mangan died in 1866. I've never seen any record in Medonte of another John Shanahan that was senior to this John.

  • Wow, I'm so excited to hear this - we are possibly related! I have no idea how right now but I know some relatives (the ones I know the most about) came from Glin. I have a John Shanahan born 1801 married a Margaret Mangan b. 1803 who came to Ontario Canada about 1832 with his father & bros & sisters but there is no Margaret or Elizabeth. On John & Margaret's gravestone in Medonte, Ontario it says both of Parish of Glin, but I havent found much in Irish records. My father was  James Edward Jerome Shanahan, and his father John Jerome, great grandfather Thomas Jamieson Shanahan, gg grandfather Thomas & then ggg grandfather John & then I think gggg grandfather Timotheo born  abt 1760 (I'm guessing.)

I have found a few totally different Shanahan/Shannahan families that I have DNA matches too as well in the United States but havent figured connection yet. These families seem to be from Roscommon & Kerry. Have anyone in your family done DNA testing? I did Ancestry DNA testing & have my trees in Ancestry, com and work in Family Tree Maker.

I'm actually coming to Ireland in Sept with my sister on a 10 day bus tour from Bunratty, south thru Limerick, Killarney, kilkenny, Waterford, Kildare & Dublin. Unfortunately I wont be able to do any genealogy but I'm so excited to see your country!

If you can share anymore info on your Shanahan's I would  be very grateful. I will keep digging on my end.

    Sincerely,

Colleen Shanahan Henderson (Scarlett's my middle name)
