My Great Grandmother - Bridget Carroll (b. abt 1861) of David and Mary Morgan Carroll (m.1842 Kilfrush) came to US @1880 and married in US Patrick Kane , born abt 1859 to James and Mary 'Kearney' Kane who I believe came from the  Hospital area but cannot find him. His brother Michael (b. abt 1862) and Sister Mary .(b. abt 1865) also came to US @1883.  I have a letter from a Mary Higgins to Bridget dated March 1895. in which she states: Bridget's father David dies late march of 1895. She says to say hello to her cousin Patrick ( I assume this to be Patrick Kane). I have a marriage record for a Mary Kane to a William Higgins for 18 jan 1872 in Knockainey & Patrickswell but do not know that this is The Mary Higgins of the letter. She also mentions that old  Mrs Garity is dead (I assume she died sometime in 1894 - early 1895) and Mrs Downes and Bridget's uncle Denis Carool also passed away over the winter. All  references to demonstrate people form that timeframe and area.

Any help would be greatly apprciated identifying and validating the names and people mentioned in teh letter.

She also states that John Curran is married and John Curtin who was teaching when Patrick was born - not sure who this Patrick is and while the letter is hard to read the only assumption I can make is John Curtin also recently got married.

I found the 1895 civil death index record for David Carroll. You can get a copy of the death record from the GRO for around 4 euros. The actual record will show the caujse of death, the townland where David lived and the name of the informant. I will look for other records later. I provided instructions for contacting the GRO below the index record.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

Thanks you very much. If you have a direct email address and you are willing to share it I will forward a copy of the letter from Mary Higgins March 1895. Mine is rkane03@charter.net

I just discovered I can attach a file so here goes. The letter is my transcription - comments in red are not part of the letter but my thoughts, and the Blue for emphasis

I read over the letter and did some searching for Mary or William Higgins in the 1901 census with no success. Maybe they were deceased or maybe as you indicated one or both went to America. There is a 1902 death index record for a Mary Higgins and two in 1925 that are possible. Also saw a few possible records for William in 1894, 1913 and 1917.I did find the Denis Carroll death index record and possible 1901 census records for John Curran and John Curtin. (See below). Where were the Kanes and Carrolls living in America? Would Mary have come through Ellis Island?

Again thank you for taking your time to do this research!

The kanes and the Carroll fmily members that came to US came to settle in Norwich CT where I also grew up. In the 1860-1900s Norwich was very industrialized - had lot of requirements for laborers etc and we suspect that 'chain immigration" was at work. History of Norwich written in 1868 (available online google books) tells of many irish who came to Norwich and worked on Dams (1830s) which provided power to run textile mills etc annd also the construction of the Norwich -Worcester railroad in late 1830-40s - butthis was before Irish famine, and my Ancestors came in the late 1870s and early 1880s which to my knowledge was well post Irish famine. Anywy there was work available we beleive one came and the rest followed ovr a period of years.

I looked for mary Higgins in US Census records in Norwich - no luck - I don't really knowif she was patrick Kane's cousin - the letter infers it but she may be joking or teasing or maybe her maiden name was Kane but no relation. I was soping beyond hope she was indeed his cousin because it may imply they were from that area.   I know without a doubt that my great grandmother Bridget Carroll was rom Hospital and while her father David died in 1895, her mother was living with John and Kate in 1901 in Hospital per the 1901 IIrish Census. Mary Morgan Carroll had to pass sometime between the 1901 and 1911 Census - any chance her death record would provide her parrents names?

Also, any chance the other people mentioned in the letter had death records in that area?

I have been to Hospital but back in 1984 and did not know then what I know now so it wasn't very prodcutive. My son did a semester in Dublin in 1993 so I spent time again but mostly around Dublin.

Again, I appreciate all you have done!!!

Death records only show the name of the deceased, date of death, cause of death, location, and the name of the informant. No parents names are shown. Regarding Mary Carroll, there are four possible death index records in the Kilmallock registration district between 1901 and 1911. Your first note mentioned that she was married in 1842 which would make her year of birth in the 1820s. Is that correct? If so, the four below may not be for your Mary. Also, the age was provided by the informant and many times it was just an educated guess. I will look later for a death record for a Mrs. Downes or Mrs. Garity.

If you want the particulars on the any of the records below. let me know.

    Again think you.

I beleive you are correct in assuming Mary Morgan Carroll would be born in the 1820s. We believe it would be 1821 but it is a bit circumstantial. - based on age at the time of the 1901 Irish census, which may be questionable. Althought the age of David Carroll was dead on. I have a birth record for him for December 14, 1814 with parents James Carroll and Ellen Raliegh.

Anyway, my ultimate goal here is to find my Kane relatives as mentioned in the original email, so far no luck.

I apprciate all you have done -didn't mean for it t become you fulltime job!!!!

I have to find my way over there again sometime soon!

I would also consider Keane as a possible name for your Kanes. Found two death index records for James Keane in Kilmallock. Ignore the middle record.

Keane James 1824 1874 1874 Deaths & burials Kilmallock, Cork, Ireland
Keane James 1876 1876 1876 Deaths & burials Kilmallock, Cork, Ireland

Yes good point about Keane and the dates for the records you show would work but these James Keanes would be late 30s when Patrick was born - probably not unreasonable for Ireland. And since death occurred in 1870s, probably no reason for them to stay in ireland - as i mentioned I beleive the immigration year was 1883.

I do have a separate question -why is Kilmallock showing as Cork?  is not Kilmallock in Limerick? it seems to be about 15km from Hospital.

And why are all the other records for those we know to be Hospital also Kilmallock?

  • Rick:

The registration districts follow the Poor Law Unions that were set up in the 1830s to support the poor. There are about 20 Limerick parishes (including Hospital) and 5 or so Cork parishes which make up the Kilmallock Union and registration district. I don't know why FindMyPast shows Cork rather than Limerick since Kilmallock is clearly in Limerick.I have noticed this oddity with some other registration districts.
