James and Lizzie (Sherlock) Millea were married in Dublin around 1877.  They had 3 daughters - Mae, Sissy and Florie.  Lizzie and her daughters relocated to Hospital Co. Limerick some time after 1884 where Lizzie worked as a midwife until about 1912.  Mae married Jack Whelan, Sissy married Patrick O'Donoghue, and Florie married Michael O'Meara.

I would greatly appreciate any information regarding this family.

  • The marriage is on the IrishGenealogy website, with James' surname transcribed as 'Millen' - it took place in July 1877 in the Pro-Cathedral at Marlborough St. Dublin in 1877 - see here

As well as father's names, first names of mothers for the bride and groom are included in Pro-Cathedral marriage records at this time.

Two of their children were baptised in Dublin city, Catherine in 1880 at St. Andrew's RC (Westmoreland St.), and Florence in 1882 in the St. Mary's (Pro-Cathedral) - see : this link The children's godparents have Sherlock and Millea as surnames, so probably family to James and Elizabeth

  • Their first child Mary Agnes appears in extracted civil birth records on FamilySearch, born 8 November 1878 Dublin - I didn't see a record of her in the parish records.

Based on the 1901 census it seems that while Elizabeth was living in Hospital town Co. Limerick, the best match for James is as a farm servant in Co. Tipperary near to Caher/Cahir, and it shows him as born in Co. Tipperary. Elizabeth/Lizzy shows her place of birth as either Dublin (1911) or Co. Dublin (1901). Cahir is nearly 100km (~60 miles), east of Millstsreet town.

I didnt find any good match for James on the 1911 census, and based on Elizabeth's 1911 return James died sometime before, but dont see a likely death for him on the BMD Index

  • This Mary Agnes ("Mae") was my great grandmother!

"My" James Millea was listed on his daughter Catherine's 1900 civil marraige record as a "PostOffice Clerk".  The 1901 census lists a Johanna Millea living in Cahir without her husband in the household.  I'm betting this is the wife of the James Millea that you mentioned.

Apparently there was a rumor in the family that my James Millea left the country which would explain his not appearing in the 1901 census.  However, I have not been able to find any documentation to support his emigration.

Again, thank you for your assistance.
