Hello,
I have recently obtained a copy of my paternal great grandfather's naturalization records for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA and have been able to track his birth back to April 1878 in Belmullet. Looking to find more information on his parents and any other ancestors I can trace back using the details I have thus far. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Looking to make a trip to Belmullet this summer to see what else I can find.

A civil marriage record should include father's names, and also occupations. The index references you need to order a research cert from the GRO are : Year 1874 / Registration District Belmullet / Volume 4 / Page 68. (The names are indexed as Anthony Devit and Honor Dougherty)

Colleen:
The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilcommon parish shows an Anthony Devitt living in Atticonaun townland. Looks like the surveyors showed all the Davitts as Devitt. This could be the father of William or possibly his father or an uncle.
I also checked the 1834 Tithe listings and there were no entries for Atticonaum. Interestingly, the Davitts in that data base were also shown as Devitt.

Just returned from a visit to Belmullet and made some great progress on the Davitt's! The North Mayo County Heritage Center was a huge help. Onto another puzzle in the Davitt family if anyone can suggest any theory's... Honor and Anthony listed above have been confirmed. However, they are both confirmed as being widowed at the time of their marriage in 1874. On their son's US immigration record it states that he came here to live with an Anthony J Davitt (born approx 1864 died 1938) who was a bartender and lived at 1240 Carlisle Street in Philadelphia. I've been able to trace most of Anthony's life here in the US but can't for the life of me determine how he'd be related to William or Anthony. Perhaps this Anthony is the son of Anthony Sr from his first marriage? Any correspondence is appreciated :)
Cheers

Might be helpful to include that this new Anthony J Davitt was born to a Margaret Murphy and Anthony Davitt and was married to Mary Tinney (also from Ireland)
