Hi I am trying to find information on a friends family as she is planning a trip to Ireland. The two families are Lally's of Rinnashinnagh ( David Lally born around 1831 and son David born 1871) and the Fergus family of Allavally (Peter Fergus )

cheers

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

I could not find any reference to Allavally in Mayo, however I did find a townland called Attavally in Kilcommon parish which is probably where the Fergus family lived.

Have you tried looking in Church records for information on the family? Most Catholic records are held locally. You could try writing to the parish priest or possible assistance. One website which may be helpful is the irishtimes where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Kilmaine parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Mayo&parish=Kilmaine&churchid=1072

If the family followed the Church of Ireland check the following links: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

You could also try looking for the families in Griffith's Valuaion. This was a property survey carried out in Ireland between 1848-1864. You can search these online here:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

For any family that remained in Ireland, you could search for them in the 1901/1911 census records. These are also available online and can be searched here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You may also want to look at County Mayo Library's website, in particular the Local Studies section. This may give your friend some generaly history and inforamtion on the area before her visit. Here is a link to their website:

    http://www.mayolibrary.ie/en/LocalStudies/

Some other websites which you may find useful  in your research are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

    Family Search: https://familysearch.org/

    Genealogy Links:  http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/mayo/index.html

It is great to hear that your friend is planning a trip over, hopefully you will have some information to give her beforehand! We have recently added a new link to the top of our page for people that are planning a visit in 2013. It takes you to a short webform where you can give details of where you are visiting and where you are coming from etc. We would greatly appreciate it if you could take a couple of minutes to fill out your friends details. Also, if your friend would like to share the details of her visit with us via our contact form at info@irelandxo.com please do so and we will endeavour to find a volunteer in the area who may be able to advise or assist her during her visit.

I hope that this is helpful to you.

    Kind regards,
