I'm searching for family of JOHN MICHAEL MCGARRY b. 23 Jun 1856 County Mayo d. 5 Oct 1933 Mayfield, Lackawanna, PA s/o MICHAEL MCGARRY and MARY NOON m. ANN O'DONNELL (d/o JAMES O'DONNELL & MARY MONIHAN) 29 Jan 1870 Kiltane Parish North Mayo Witness 1. PATRICK MCGARRY 2. MAGGY O'DONNELL.  John lived in the townland of Aughoose at the time of his marriage to Ann O'Donnell.  John & Ann immigrated to the US ca. 1883 w/ 4 of their children; JOHN JAMES, MICHAEL FRANCIS, JAMES PATRICK & THOMAS WILLIAM.  They had one daughter, MARY ANN, who was born in PA.  She married JOHN PATRICK MCHALE whose family was also from County Mayo.  James Patrick McGarry m. BRIDGET FRANCIS MORAN, another family from Mayo.  John Michael and Ann McGarry had 6 other "unknown" children who were born and died prior to the year 1900 according to the US Census.  I am a descendant of Michael Francis McGarry.

    Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool), this could be a good place to find more information.

    Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the family may have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation).

    Have you tried checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for other relatives? The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).
