Hello.

I am helping a woman who is planning a trip with her cousins in April to Limerick and Tipperary.  Her gr grandfather was born in the Co. Limerick, and her gr grandmother was born in Tipperary.  She doesn't know the townlands.  I just found a reference for the gr grandfather tonight (who was born 23 Dec 1852, or 54 per various records), in the database at RootsIreland, showing a baptism in Castleconnell Parish, but I don't know if I should send her to the St. Patrick's Church in Ahane or to St. Joesph's Church in Castleconnell.

Here are the details of what I found:

Thomas Gleason/Gleeson, born about 1824, Co. Limmerick

married Alice Finn, from Co. Tipperary (birth unknown)

I found 2 baptisms for their children at the NLI website:

Thomas P Gleeson, bap 23 Dec 1850, Castleconnel parish (Mother shows "Ely", maybe for "Elizabeth"?)

Michael Gleeson, bap 14 Jun 1853, same church

Thomas and Alice went to Montreal, Canada about 1854, with their daughter Ellen, born about 1844, and son Thomas.

Alice died there in 1857, and Thomas remarried a Margaret there in 1858.
In Griffith's Valuation, there are many Gleeson's, most from Killeenagariff parish (none that I found from the Parish of Clanwilliam).  Since I don't know Thomas (the father) or Alice's parents, I don't know who in the Valuation might be Thomas' family, and he left for Canada prior to the valuations.

I'm really leaning towards the family being from the Ahane area, but the NLI website shows the baptisms to be in the Castleconnel church...

Unless I'm mistaken, and baptisms done at Ahane are in the same microfilm.

Could you possibly confirm which church the family attended, by looking at the microfilm at NLI?

Thank you for any help!

  • Hello Mary,

I went online to reseasrch the history of both churches and found that St. Joseph's Church  Castleconnel church was consecrated on 9th August 1863.  The church of St. Patrick Ahane was an earlier church commenced in 1838, so I would think that this is the church.  If you looka at the castleconnell parish website it shows Castleconnel Ahane as the same parish.

Hope this helps answering your query.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Perfect!

Thank you Anne!  I was reading the Parish Website page on both churches, but completely missed that clue last night!
    Thank you, again!

  • Anne (or anyone else that might be able to help),
After your post, I found that there was a Thomas Gleeson living in the 1852 townland of Gooig.  I also found the family of Matthew Gleeson living in that townland in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.  Is there a way to find out if Matthew's descendants are still there?
The cousins of the lady I'm helping might like to have a visit with them, if they are willing.  I don't know their travel plans, but Kathryn (the lady) asked me if I could find out if there were any Gleeson family members still living there.
    Thank you!
    Mary

  • Hello Mary,

As you will appreciate the surname Gleeson is rather plentiful in Ireland so I have no way of knowing if there are any descendants.  However Ahane/Castleconnell is a small place so it might  be worth your while having a chat with the local publican or parish priest to see if they know of any connections.  Families tended to be on the large side back in the day so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that this Gleeson is related to yours.  You could always just knowk on the door and see where it goes from there.  Here is the residential phone book though many people now dont have landlines just mobile phones. http://www.eirphonebook.ie/

Sorry I can't be of better assistance,

    Anne

  • Hi Mary,

I know the Castleconnell area but not well enough that I would know the names of families living in Gooig. However I could make enquiries locally - if you are interested you can email me at jimvaughan@eircom.net

  • Thank you Anne.  I fully agree about the names -- and I didn't even think about the fact that all of this occured almost 200 years ago!  (face palm inserted here!) giggle.

Thank you Jim, I will send an email.

After William died, Ellen married Patrick Coffey, they had Thomas Coffey, 1843-1917
Patrick Coffee took the family (except Allice Finn and Thomas Gleason) to Montreal, Quebec in 1852.  Some of them settled in Montreal, some of them moved to London, Ontario, and many of them moved to the US, settling in Michigan.  Alice and Thomas Gleason took their family to Montreal about 1853/1854.  Thomas died there 1892.  Thomas and Alice are buried in the Notre Dame graveyard.
