I am searching for any additional information on the family of my grandfather, John O'Brien, who was born in Kilteely in 1852. His parents were Matthew O'Brien and Margaret Slattery who lived in Knockroe, Kilteely.

John O'Brien joined the R.I.C. as a police officer, and was stationed in Craughwell, County Galway - where he met and married my grandmother Celia Flynn, and had 6 children. After retirement, he spent his life in Galway, passing on in 1932.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I located the 1889 civil marriage record wou have to sign-in to see the record.hich is the first link below and shows the names of the fathers of the bride and groom. I then located the 1901 census records for Celia and the childrena and John was in the Craughwell RIC barrack. By 1911, he had retired and they were living closer to Tuam in Kilmoylan parish.

The last two links are the civil death records for John in 1932 and Celia in 1941.

My great grand uncle William Mockler married Honora O'Brien of Knockroe Kilteely. Her parents were Thomas O'Brien and Bridget Sullivan. Thomas's father was Matthew. I believe your family and Honora O'Brien's family are related with both from Knockroe.

Matthew and Margaret slattery married as mentioned above in Feb 1847 in Solohead & Oola, most likely parish of birth of Margaret Slattery. Matthew O;'briens father was Matthew O'brien also and his mother was Judith Roache (her father was david Roache born circa 1780) also from Knockroe (lived beside the mocklers). Your Matthew O'brien married to Margaret Slattery had it appears at least 5 siblings:

1: Thomas born circa 1800 died 19/1/1889 in Knockroe. This Thomas married bridget O'Sullivan from Cross Pallasgrean and had the following children.:

A: Catherine born 1829 (possibly more children born between 1829 and 1832 however the record for Kilteely Baptisms were not recorded for this period)

    B: Matthew Born 1833 RIP 1869

    C: Mary born 1835

    D: Margaret born 1839

E: Hanora born 1842  this hanora married William Mockler in 1862 (making your John a 1st cousin to hanora)

F Winifred born 1846 married Patrick conway Knockroe

2: Johanna born circa 1815 RIP USA

"Winifred & Johanna O'brien & margaret Roach, parish of Kilteely townsland of Knockroe co Limerick, when last heard from was in Norwalk, Connecticut. Information of them will be received by directing a letter to Mary Stone, Buffalo, Erie, Co. State of NY"

"Searching for Missing Friends:Irish immigrant advertisements -Boston Pilot 1854.

3: Winifred born 20/7/1816 RIP USA

    4: Henry born 5/7/1820

    5: Matthew born 1821

No birth record identified however death certificate record Died aged 68 years in 1889 married and his death was informed by his grandnephew Matthew Mockler this confirms that matthew O'Brien was a brother of Thomas O'Brien married to Bridget Sullivan, withness at wedding were John Slattery & Timothy ryan

In the Griffiths survey matthew leased 11 acres 0 Perches and 31 roods.
Death informed by Matthew Mockler Grandnephew

6: Bridget born 1822 married James Murnane Ballyvouden Kilteely.

I had a quick look at the land records for knockroe and in 1840 Matthew O'Brien & Judith Roachwas farming besite catherine Roach (widow to david Roach) a thomas O'brien (relative) and William Coughlan. This land holding of 11 acres 0 Perches and 31 roods.By 1865 Matthew and Margaret Slattery were leasing this land. around 1900 the land was still heald by this couple however Matthew had died in 1889. by 1911 Michael thie son was holding the land and continued to hold it at least up until 1930.

    Hope this is helpful
