Hi I am trying to trace my family from Knocklong - I have found some information in the 1911 census when they lived at Knocklong West. I have been unable to find any more information - I hope someone out there may be able to help me.  Thanks!!!

  • Hi Patricia,

Can you be more specific in who you are looking for.  There are many carey families in Ireland.  What first names and what dates are you researching?

  • Hi Anne   I am looking specifically for the family of William and Bridget Carey formerly of Knocklong West in Limerick -  both born 1863. They had eight living children namely Micheal  born 1894- a farm labourer - John born 1896 - a farm labourer, Patrick born 1898- a scholar, Mary- born 1900 a scholar, Thomas born 1906, Cornelius born 1908 and Bridget born 1910 - all under school age at the point of census in 1911. I know they had a small holding in Knocklong West but have been unable to find any other information. Patrick Joseph Carey was my grandfather and he was born on 24/04/1898 but that is all the information I have. He died when I was young and we have very little to work with. Thank you for responding so soon. It is very much appreciated. Patricia.

  • Hi Patricia,

I'm not from KNocklong so I don't know if there are any careys living there at the moment.  I looked at the census for 1911 and found your family.  Have you looked at the bottom ot the page and looked athe other forms.  click on the house and building return form.  I don''t know how big Knocklong was in 1911 but your house at no. 7 seems quite near the pub at no. 11.  So I'd guess that it wasn't very far outside the village.

I see from the other form that the house had three rooms and was a 2nd class house.  It also had a piggery outside.  Scrutinize all these forms and get all the info you can.

Have you looked at the phone book to see if there are any Careys living in Knowklong at present.

Go on to google maps and you'll find Knocklong west there.  You'll get a real live view of the place.

  • Hi Anne  I have taken a look at the other forms on the census as you suggested and this has opened up a door for me which, how strange it may seem, had been otherwise closed for decades. I  have also taken a look at Knocklong on google earth, the house is obviously no longer there but I have managed to find some information about the farm between 1900 and the 1920's.  Thank you for pointing me  in the right direction, my family were absolutely clueless as to how we were to find anything out at all. We drew blanks at every corner!!  This is going to be a fascinating search for all of us.  Patricia.
