Cannot find proof of John McCrohon born 1795 around Limerick. His father's name also John believed born about 1755.  There is a younger brother, William.  Both boys joined Kings Guard 4th Reg of Foot and came to Australia.

I cannot find any history of John and William nor their ancestors.  Needing assistance please re their ancestors and why they joined British Army

Thank you

  • Hi Vicki,
Going by his discharge record, the year was 1836, it says he was born in St. John's Parish, Limerick.  That would be Limerick City.
They joined the British Army as Ireland was part of Great Britain at that time.
I looked for army records online and no results.

The only other record I found was a marriage
23rd June 1826 in Saint Thomas, Winchester, Hampshire.
    Her name is Emily Banham.
Did they have a son Henry William in1832?
One is showing it says Ghatham, Kent it's actually Chatham, Kent.

Be careful as there is another John McCrohan he was born 1795 in County Kerry, different parents and he lived then died in Ireland.
There are a few McCrohan in County Kerry in Tralee.
My grandfather enlisted in Tralee in 1908.

  • Vicki,

Regarding your question about why Irish men joined the British army, I've heard the Irish writer Tom Phelan speak about this topic. (He wrote a book about the Irish in the British army in WWI, The Canal Bridge).

According to Phelan, there were many reasons why men signed up to fight in WWI: a guaranteed income, a sense of adventure and an opportunity to see the world, to save small Catholic Belgium, because John Redmond had encourage them to join up, and in some cases, out of loyalty to the King.  Now obviously your ancestor lived at a different time, but some of these reasons may have been valid.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • I'm not sure if this a repeat of my post.

Patricia,. Thank you for the info.

Margot, thank you as well.  In relation to John my thoughts are that he married Emily Banham aka Ducroix and they did have a son Henry W same dob.

I am interested please if you could provide details of the parents of John born in Kerry and the DOB of John at St John's. Any parents listed please.

Thank you for helping me out, it can get quite confusing.

    Cheers Vicki McCrohon

  • Hi Vicki,

I looked again at Henry McCrohan's Baptism, there isn't an image, it says, St Mary's Chatham.
Kent UK location map - St Mary's Island, Kent - Wikipedia

The other John I mentioned in Kerry in 1795, it's not, it's 1775. He is your John's Father. I cannot find any births there.
Was John's father in the Army?
More than likely, Baptisms in the Barracks, that why I can't any Baptisms in books.
    Were they Catholic?

I looked in the Tithe records for any McCrohon in Ireland and there is one in County Kerry.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)

This is between Listowel and Tralee.   (I have been to Tralee in Australia, completely different places!)
